Everyone should own a .22?

One rifle gets boring very quick. I have 1 22 that I shoot,it goes everwhere with me and up at our camp it sits on the picnic table with a bix of 22 CB shorts and whenever I get bored of talking to the wife I plink away at some steel I have set up in the bush.
I shoot it every range session to start the day and to finish, you really are able to pick out bad habits quickly and cheaply.
Id keep it and get the AR.

you say in your post the 10/22 is nice and I like it. so why sell it? won`t take long to go through the money you get for it in center fire ammo. yes the attraction for a 22 is the ammo price. but only you can answer if you enjoy shooting it or not.

I often wonder about carrying restricted in a SHTF scenario. Might attract some attention at the very least?
If the anxiety-laden dream of S hitting the fan, any fan, came to pass, why would anyone care if a handgun drew attention? The neighbourhood would likely be crawling with guys trying to survive come heck or high water. ;)

Keep the 10/22 or get a .22 that shoots really well. But don't get an AR on a shoe-string budget just so you can say you have one. Get a good quality one if you must have one. Buy once, cry once.

Scrimp on movie nights or bar trips rather than sell the 10/22. You can't get big bucks for it and you will just end up replacing it at a higher cost later.

I look at the money spent on guns, ammo, gear like it was spent on beer or gambling. Play money never to be seen again. Thrown into the wind. That's why I don't generally ever sell any of my guns.

Keep it for now, save for the AR then once you buy the AR and you still don't enjoy the 10/22 sell it and put the money towards a nice bolt .22. A fine rimfire rifle is an absolute joy to shoot at the range but the 10/22 isn't one of them.

The best reason to own a .22 is to use it to introduce new people to firearms.

The more people that are introduced to the shooting sports, the better chance we all have keeping our shooting/hunting heritage alive.

I have owned a # of different firearms over the years and some of them I have sold. With every one I have sold at some point I wish I still had it. When it comes to .22's, the answer is yes. EVERYONE should own one, at least one. Personally, I own 9 at the moment. Keep it and you'll only have to save up just a little while longer.

Keep it. You will miss it at some point even though you don't shoot it much now when it's gone you will wish you had it instead of the 300 bucks or so you get back out of it. One day you will go camping somewhere where you would be allowed to plink if only you still had a non restricted, you might buy a rimfire plinking target for range ues and you may bring a first time shooter out and your 10/22 would be a great choice for the first rifle to let them try.

If you don't really like your 10/22 and are more interested in an AR style, then get an AR and get a .22 upper as well as your .223 upper.

That way you have only one "rifle", the AR lower, so you can tell wifey "But I only have ONE rifle"

It depends ... is the 10/22 just going to sit there and collect dust or is there a possibility that you will want to shoot with it in the future. Here's a checklist of things to take into account:

  • Is it your first rifle? If you sell it, will you regret, feel sad, angry, and alone? On your deathbed will you call out its name with your final breath? "Rosebud ...."
  • Will you ever travel to a range that won't allow the AR? A lot of indoor ranges wouldn't allow it for sure.
  • Will you ever want to shoot on someone's farm or public land, and not at a range? You cannot do that with an AR.
  • Will you ever want to go shoot 1000 rounds in a day? With the 10/22 you're looking at $60 to $80 for decent stuff, but with the AR you're looking at $550 for the cheap stuff.

My 2 cents -- for the cost of the AR vs. what you'd get for selling the 10/22, even with your upgrades, I'd keep the 10/22.

Alright guys, you've convinced me. I will hang onto the 10/22! Will take some time before I can convince the wife we need another rifle and save up for the AR...I'm not so good with patience once I decide I want something!

Glad you decided to keep the 10/22; it is always fun to have one around. If anything, it is a nice gun to have for new shooters if you take people out. The AR does not kick much, but it can still be intimidating for someone who has never shot before.

As for the AR; do you plan to buy a bone stock one and that is it? If not, and you cannot find one decked out how you like, you could consider building one. I built one over a year (was supposed to be 2 :)) with everything that I thought I wanted at the time; have swapped out 1/3 of the parts since :). Nice thing in doing this is that you can buy bits and pieces over time.

I know what you mean OP. I don't realy like .22s myself, it gets boring pretty quick. I still keep mine because its so cheap I wont get much back selling it. Plus my wife likes it .
