Exceptional M14/M1A Precision?

ErrrMaiGerrrrddd This thread has alot of potential. I'd be one of the first to post exactly what the OP is asking but unfortunately my rifle is still over at Tac Ord being put together :(

And the Vortex PST 4-16 FFP arrived the other day... Once I've got the parts back I plan on making videos detailing the whole process of building a 'precision M1A'. You'll be damn sure I'll post a massive thread about it as well detailing the load development and precision results as well. For now, I've got 200 rounds of Lapua 185 ammo to get through before load development (I'm thinking 180 Berger BTs with Varget/Reloader 17).

ETA should be 6-8 weeks. Rest assured I'll make the post once everything has been done.

I don't think I like this thread anymore:ang. I look at all these rifles you guys have posted, then I look at my old canoe paddle that's been giving me so much trouble recently..........then I weep like a little girl....

Keep 'em coming boys. I actually do like seeing this stuff. Can't wait to see some of the results of all the braggin'!;)

Don't feel bad, 358Rooster. At least you have an M-14 and it shoots more than decently. If it was altered to how you like it you would just get bored with it and move on to some other project. Seeking perfection is a constant behaviour for people. Take your time and do it right.

The barrel was shipped from Real Pissy Service Int'l. Of course the op rod guide was left behind. It (and a new adjustable gas plug) arrived about a week after the picture.

The Krieger op rod guide came with counter-sunk holes but not drilled all the way through for those that were wondering (must me installed by gunsmith).

Im atleast 6-8 weeks away too n Ill have some info to share. The savage axis will prolly shoot tighter groups and be tons lighter of course.
But you never know when you're hunting in Alberta if you have to stop a couple cars or a stampeding herd of wild cthulus. Id rather have the insurance.
Prolly 60-70% just cool factor I bloody love m14s always have. Getting to own + play with a good example is thoroughly awesome + good motivation to do pushups to be able to lug it around.

What kind of gas cylinder you have there?

one request: pictures of grouping from a m14
5 pages later: lots of pictures of guns, not a single one shows the target.

are there any reasons to be shy ? ? ?

i would break the ice with my iron sight 25 moa grouping at 100M but i dont think ts a gun problem.

Gas cylinder is a Springfield Armory Unitized 'NM' gas cylinder. Nice n smooth on the inside, impressive finish, lice looking welds. Got it from Brownells via Hungry (a little over $100). Nice buy as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, that's typically how it goes. It's actually a pretty shi**y time to ask guys to go to the range, shoot, and take pictures of their results - at least where I'm from. The goat trail leading down to my range is bound to be impassible by now, since we've had some warm weather. Between that and the wind that never seems to stop lately... I'll try to suck it up once I get home again and maybe go to the Wildlife Federation range.

I'm still in South America for another week, hence no pics of groups. I had some crappy phone pics of my rig on my iPad, so I figured they were better than nothing. I'll post some groups in the next couple weeks.

Cheers

Can do this:

group_zpsab3b8d25.jpg

consistantly with handloaded 168 gr smk's, Federal GMM etc, only using a leupold mk 4 1.5 - 5.

Waiting for warmer weather to try out some new receipes and I need glass with more power.

Rifle is a sage stocked LRB m25 with 18.5" kreiger barrel.

This is my stock Norc M14 with M1A rear iron sight assembly.
Boyds unfinished (finished by me) Walnut Stock.
Had to tack weld the Op Rod Guide to the barrel in line as it came loose.

Here's a 3 shot group with quality 168gr Federal from 100 meters with open irons from the prone with an old sandbag for a rest.

Of course the ubiquitous first shot "flyer" from the cold barrel lol Wish I would have warmed it up with two shots aside before I squeezed this one out :(

PB170264.jpg

Total $ invested? $300 for the used rifle private local purchase, $80 for the unfinished Boyds stock, $60 for a second hand set of M1A irons

$440 total consistent 1.5" - 2" groups at 100 meters with irons.

Good enough.

How much money have some of you guys sunk into these things!?

There's got to be some on here with at least $3K! They still seem to all shoot about 1" to 2" groups regardless.

Has done this:

With a B-square scope mount, a run through a Hungry clinic and a Bushnell 3-9x scope.

Since then, I've gone to a Dlask spring guide and USGI recoil spring and upgraded to a used ARMS18 mount. I'm still fiddling with scope rings and have a lot of irons in the fire, but I'd like to get this bugger to do sub MOA this year. If it turns out to be capable of only doing 1.25 MOA groups consistantly I'll be happy with that. Last shot was the flyer, and yes I'm still pissed about it.

Total amount invested Travis Bickle? Why so smug? YMMV. Each rifle is different.

Not so much smug.

I've been laughed at by numerous people when I suggest that it takes very little to get the best results out of these rifles.

Then I usually get yelled at after putting forth the idea that adding thousands of dollars in stocks and rails and grips and tweaking doesn't make them shoot any better than 1"-2" groups at 100 meters lol

I will admit though, it sure as hell makes them look bad ass.

It's a passion of mine :D
