Why do you need an excuse?
Excuses lead to complications which just leads to more ..complications.
Complications can blow up in front of ones face.
First its just AR parts next will be reloading gear then a gun room with safes etc..

That's what I do with my second AR.
I bought the lower 149$. I told her that I can't pass this deal. Now the gun is registered to you and cost you 149$. Every 3-4 weeks I order parts. I'm waiting my buffer tube and stock. My lower will be complete. Next step, the upper.....
Over the year, I'll be building an other AR and because I order 100-200$ at the time, it seem cheap for her and me.

Take her to a couple of motorbike stores and start talking about buying a MX bike. If that doesn't get her greenlighting the AR project out of fear that you are going to mid life crisis yourself into an early grave, nothing will.
