I've been Whitetail deer hunting for 10 years now in the Yorkton area (I'm going between Yorkton and Regina right now). I'm the only hunter/gun nut in my family and the 2 guys I deer hunt w/ aren't interested in any other type of hunting. I got into hunting on my own but I'd like to take it to another "level" (ie, mule deer, antelope, elk, moose, black bear, grizzly....maybe even an African hunt someday :D but that's another issue :p ).

How do you recommend I meet people who would be interested in introducing me to hunting other species than Whitetails? I'd even be interested in varmint/coyote hunting....seems a shame there's all this hunting to be done and I'm not doing any of it! :(

I'm very glad/proud that I got into hunting and shooting without family support or a tradition to follow but I'm not satisfied and would like to take it further...make it something I can pass on someday.

I appreciate any advice you can offer (and apologize if it's been covered but I thought it would be useful if I can get local/SK Gunnutz to respond). Thanks! :)

well i am not local but i bet there is a good chance if you do some looking online you might find a fish and game club in your area that you can join as a starting point that way you know everyone you meet there is into hunting also hang around a hunting store and talk to people there as well also you might look into 1 or 2 guided hunts for the first couple of times if its feasable

I am in the same boat as u, got into hunting on my own, I am a little luckier then u in that I have a great Mule Deer pop on my in laws land and usually get drawn every year( SMZ - shot gun). Antelope is tuff to get drawn for. It took a co-worker 7 or 8 yrs to get drawn and hunt was over in 4 hrs- kind of anti climatic. Check with co workers to see if there is any hunting nuts. Personally I prefer to hunt on my own- never have to worry about when can he/she go or cant etc. Bunch of co-workers and I are planning a bear trip next year around Meadow lake area. Lots of times ppl wont talk about hunting because of the stigma attatched to it. My boss and a few aothers are so anti hunting its ridiculas so nobody brings it up at coffee time just because of the hassle.

Yeah, I try to bring it up as often as I can in social situations. It's clear when no one's interested and time to shut up. More commonly, I get to hear stories about the brother in law who's a big hunter or an uncle from BC and that I should really meet someday...which is just small talk and never actually happens. ;)

I'll just keep at it and try to make some more contacts. Doing a guided hunt sounds like a great idea as well! I'll have to look into it.

Thanks

I live next door in Manitoba and I find it hard to make good hunting contacts.......so I hunt on my own most of the time. The locals all have hunting friends and groups and they are not very keen about letting new people in or taking them out or giving out information either.

I have been on my own since I moved here and had to scope things out on my own...........oh well, such is life.

I've never been hunting myself just because of that very issue, plenty of folks around me hunt but all their groups have been formed years ago and they simply don't have an extra "spot".

Well I live about 2 hours away from you and do a lot of coyote hunting in the winter, if you would like to tag along drop me a PM. Oh yeah I am just starting to do a little crow hunting too, if your interested.

I recommend joining a club dedicated to hunting such as Safari Club International or a local sportsman club. and get involved not only will you meet those with similar interests but you will be able to help out wildlife and our hunting heritage. I moved to southern Ontario to follow my wifes career and I joined a club and now I work for Safari club International as the field coordinator for Canada so it is always worth getting involved. I did and now I have one of the best jobs in the world I work with hunters and wildlife issues daily what else could you ask for? If your interested in SCI I could help you out.
Best regards and goodluck.
