Experience/opinions on Speer Grand Slam bullets?

Who's used these, and what do you think of them?

How's the accuracy? Performance on game?

I suspect they'll be average for accuracy, and perform somewhere between a traditional C&C bullet and a partition?

I have some in 308 and in 375 that I'm interested in trying out.
 
There was a design change a number of years ago. Used to be a premium bullet with two types of lead hardness. Harder lead in the heel making it partition like. Now the jacket is thicker on the heel instead but doesnt perform nearly as well as the old design. If buying new i would get a proven performer such as a partition or accubond. Perhaps tsx/ttsx.
 
The old ones had the softer lead front and 5% antimony rear core. I tried some in my 338 but never did shoot any game with them, they were accurate in my gun.

The newer ones just have a singe core that is the same hardness throughout and a fairly thick jacket. I also tried them in my 338 and found they shot poorly and never did use them on game. Shot them in to some test media and found them to be a very stout bullet and they made nice mushrooms. Wouldn't want to have to use them at low velocity impacts, jacket is thick even at the front of the bullet and I suspect the lead has a bit of antimony in it was well.
 
i have found they shoot fairly well and work just fine. i would rate them as a premium cup and core bullet. the bonded and partions i believe to be better.
 
I couldn't find 375 Partitions or TSX's anywhere, so I got these and some Accubonds to try out.

The 308's I have are 5-6 years old at least. I have lots of other 308 bullets though, so this is just for curiosity's sake.
 
I have used bunch of .358"/250 gr. GS bullets in my .35 Whelen, with completely satisfactory results. My buddy uses their 130 grain .277" in his .270 win. for all his hunting, deer, elk, moose. They are reliable bullets.
 
I know a couple of guys who use them in .338 mag and .375 mag, and they like them quite a bit.

I've found them to be too expensive for my tastes, but have only heard good things about their performance on game.
 
I used one .375 bullet (285 gr I believe) on a young bull moose several years ago. Distance about 80 yds and it was a one shot kill with the moose falling where he stood.
I managed to recover the bullet and it had lost substantial weight after impact.

Otherwise, it seemed to perform well.
 
I've tried Speer Grand Slams in I think .308cal and .338cal, never got them to shoot accurately in any rifle but the fired bullets I recovered seemed to be very well constructed; ideal for big, tough critters.
 
I use 250 gr GS in my 338 win mag because I got a lifetime supply of them a few years ago from a friend for free after he gave up on 338s. Shot 4 moose with them so far and all have died right there. Recovered 2 from the bulls I shot a few years ago, they mushroomed perfectly and held together. They have a soild centre post that seems to hold everything together.
