I Just recently picked up a .308 hunting rifle while my buddy picked up a .270win hunting rifle. I have reloading gear, and he doesn't. He wants to reload and (duh) so do I. We were looking at buying some components together (primers & powder) to help bring the cost/round even the smallest amount. What I am curious about is if anyone here has used Varget powder for both .270win and .308win. For the bullet weights that we are looking at for each respective rifle, the Hodgdon reloading data website says that both have a 44gr starting load. Seeing as these are hunting rifles, almost 160 44gr charges/lb of powder is probably good for what we are currently looking at, and splitting on the $40+ (depending on where we can find it) lb of powder can bring our cost down almost 10 to 14 cents/bang. The reloading will be taking place at my place and I usually only reload using 1 powder (seeing as I only reload .223 and .308 at the moment) and would prefer to keep it that way so as to avoid any possible mistakes (still new to the reloading game and wish to keep things simple still.)

So, I say again as I ramble; Anyone here have experience using Varget for both .270win & .308win?

It can be done, but the performance of the 270 will be under par.
You can also load 4350 in a 308, while the 270 will live up to its billing the 308 will now be lack lustre in performance.
The two cartridges you list vary too much in expansion ratio. Hoping to find a single powder that allows for good performance in both, is not likely.

I think you both need to quite trying to reload thinking it will save you gobs of cash.
It never does, what it does do is allow you to shoot more for the same end user cost.

Pick up some manuals, and drill down into reading them.

Each of you buy a 1lb bottle of powder. This way, if one happens to shoot more, then he won't be using up your half of the powder. Not to mention what Lefty said above about different powders for each type of ammo.

Far better for each of you to have your own powder. It isn't hard to keep track if you only allow one kind of powder on the table when loading. Also, powder lasts forever if properly stored. As you are only going to save about 20 bucks by sharing, it's not worth the aggravation.

For me, the whole point of reloading is to develop loads that are ideally suited to the purpose I have in mind. To try to use unsuitable components just to save a little money seems to defeat the purpose of reloading in the first place.

My advice is to get proper components that will make each round work to its potential, or don't bother reloading. Anyone who will "make mistakes" because he has several suitable powders around for different calibers shouldn't be reloading; it requires attention to detail, and care at all times.

Buying some components together smacks of sharing. Sharing is communism. However, you're comparing apples and oranges.

Heya,
I reload a .308 Win and .270 Win both with Varget "AR2208" ....

270Win, 130gr Corelokts.... 45gr Varget. Rem 700 sps 24inch barrel
308Win, 150gr ABs.... 44gr Varget. Tikka t3 22inch

Have shot Sambar deer and Red deer (270) at 300m No problems, found projectile on far side hide from behind Shoulder shots.

It is my "long range" setup, an using Varget you don't gain some FPS compared to Slower burning powders but I reload several Cals with Varget... keeps it easy ;)
