Experiences with superformance

We tried some in sksavengers salvage 223, i can`t remember what the velocity was compared to the other factory stuff but the accuracy was not as good as other Hornady ammo. I think even the zombie stuff grouped better.

It was faster than the zombie and the steel match but the velocity was not as consistant. Superformance is the only ammo that would not shoot 5 shots under an inch. I was not impressed with it

I have put a few boxes of Superperformance 6.5X55 through my Husqvarna 1640 and M96. Nice shooting and accurate. Barely noticed any extra kick.

I believe Why Not? observed very erratic performance out of the .300 Win Mag version of that ammo.
I have a buddy who falls into every single mythical tale told. Won't listen to me, but believes everything any idiot tells him. 4yrs ago, guys he works withheld him that his Parker Hale .30-06 was far too light for moose hunting. It would barely be a deer rifle. He needed to buy a .300 win mag. So he did. He wasn't the world's greatest shot to begin with, so this just made it better. he can't get the rifle sighted in, so he asks me to do it. Blue box Federals were shooting 1.5" groups. Good enough for any big game hunting. He didn't hunt that year. Next year, guys at work tell him that blue box ammo won't do the trick on elk. He needs Superformance ammo. So, off he goes. That crap wouldn't hit a 2' target twice on the same scope setting, even with me behind the rifle.

How disappointing. I picked up a box of superformance 270. I guess I won't be surprised if it doesn't group all that well then.

That sounds just like 260 remington velocity, it's easy to replicate in a new 6.5x55 as the case is larger than the 260.

Just make sure you aren't shooting it in a 100 year old rifle.

I load mine with 260 remington data and voila1

I bought a box of this stuff to try. I don't load, so I was trying various factory loads. So far, with a peep sight, at 100yds, privi partizan give me around
1-2", core lokts around 3", and winchester look more like a shotgun pattern on paper. I have been shooting core lokts for years, but when I saw the box of hornady's for almost ten bucks cheaper than the last box of remington I bought, I thought I would give them a try. A buddy shoots blue boxes and swears by them. I'll give them a try next time out as I've had great luck with them in other rifles.

8mmpeter, im finding Remington prices just keep going up an up, here in Aus.
understand theres different reasons behind the price hike in each country... but i dont see why it should keep rising.

I have recently moved on to handloading , but I can tell you that the 6.5x55 140 grain SST Superformance load shoots well in my Heym SR30. I haven't chronographed it, but It is accurate in my rifle, less than 1 inch for a 100 yard 3 shot group. If you are looking for velocity the Superformance load is the fastest I know if that would be safe in your rifle ( which given its date of manufacture I assume is a Mauser 96 type action).

I haven't used it on game so I can't comment on that aspect of performance. I expect that at short ranges it could produce quite a lot of meat damage due to high velocity combined with the design of the SST bullet. That is just a guess though so take it with a grain of salt.

I found that the Federal 140 grain 6.5x55 loads shot well in my Husqvarna 1640, and performed very well on whitetail deer.

I have shot 4 boxes of the 140gr out of my Tikka 695 in 6.5x55 and can't complain, it's a good stand in when I don't have any handloads handy. Seems to work well with my Sheperd scope. I also tried the 95gr in a Ruger No.1 in 243 and it shot very well! Recently I gave the 264gr FP a go in my 444 and was also satisfied with the results, I have always had good results with Hornady

I bought a box to try in my X-bolt 7mm rem mag and it wouldn't group nearly as well as Federals do loaded with Partitions

Same with my win 70 7mm rm.
Groups were "okay" for my hunting applications but my rifle really likes vital shok federals with the partitions.
The other and more critical issue I had with this ammo out of my 7mm rm , was the actual killing performance and bullet behavior.
I know these rounds are zippin right along and not really meant for close range performance. 2 mulies down with superformance, put them down on the spot, one a little over a 100 yards or so and one close at minus 60 yards. One, clean thru, blew vitals apart, little damage... Perfect. The other, closer shot just tagged the tip of the shoulder blade and then took out a 2 inch section of rib. I dug shrapnel from the neck, shrapnel all thru the cavity. Probably a slower caliber would be okay, but noslers don't do that ;)

It was my go to round this year for my 6.5x55, got my barrel right before season started and didn't have time to make up a load. They were the most accurate and consistent out of the several brands I tried.

From what I saw of Australian prices I'm surprised that you gents can shoot at all. Most of the factory ammo and components that I bought or priced out were within pennies of double what I'd pay locally. I cringe when I see $42 on .308 and 30-06 Federal blue-box, wince at $50 a pound for powder I get for 20-25 and I think my eyes misted over at 80 some bucks for .30 cal TSXs.
