Hello everyone,

My wife just passed her firearm and hunting test recently. We are on the market for a rifle which she can use hunting and on the range. The biggest game wold be a White tail deer. What caliber would you guys recommend with a lightest recoil and removable magazine? I have two brand in my mind. I like the CZ with the SST and the Browning X-bolt.

Thanks Jozsef

I'd be more worried about getting a rifle that fits her. Even a light recoiling cartridge can kick like crazy if the rifle fits poorly but if a rifle fits well, then heavier recoil cartridges can feel like pussy cats.

There are many great choices with those two firearms. The 7.62x39 in the CZ 527 was the first thing that came to mind. The 243 winchester, 7mm-08, 7x57, 260, 6.5x55, 25-06...............these are light recoil cartridges and will harvest a whitetail quite easly.

I am no expert but .243 Winchester would be my recommendation for calibre.

At 5' 8" she probably doesn't need a rifle to fit a smaller framed person, definitely let her handle a few and chose what she likes.

Keep in mind is caliber restriction in Southern Ontario just in case she wants to hunt coyotes or groundhogs in the off season.

Jnyiri,

My wife is five eight, slim build, and has used a 7X57 since shortly after we got married. That was 46 years ago, and it has never been less than enough gun. Medium recoil, accurate, and kills big game far beyond what you might expect. She also shoots a 358 Win, but enjoys the '57 much more.

If I were doing it all over again, it would be the same sweetheart and another 7X57 or a 7mm-08.

You're a peach Ted...

My recommendation would be a .260 or 7mm-08... Depending on if you reload or not... .260 if you do, 7mm-08 if you don't. Also consider a Browning BAR Short-Trac... It soften's up the recoil and is plenty accurate to 250 yards. A .243 is not a bad choice either... My wife and daughter's all shoot .243's and find them very comfortable... Choose the right bullet and they are more than enough for whitetail deer.

260 or a 7-08 would be my first choices here.
As Ted said, the 7x57 is a very fine, light recoiling and very effective round.
The 6.5x55 should also be in this mix.

Im In the same situation right now, Im considering a 250 savage in a cooper( also because I want one) a tikka t3 in 6.5x55, They have no recoil at all, a 7mm-08 in an x bolt or a kimber in 257 roberts. All these are light enough for her to carry comfterbly and all these have very light recoil. Any of these cartridges work great on deer sized game

They have no recoil at all,

Hold the butt of the rifle squarely on your nose and pull the trigger and when you get up off your knees and wipe the blood away I'm guessing you'll reconsider. ...lol It's a lighter recoiling cartridge compared to many for sure but still recoil there. Several of the 6.5s are great choices when looking for a low recoil option though.

I bought my wife a Remington model 7 youth In 7mm08 we added a limb saver pad and changed from a synthetic to a Remington walnut stock, she is 5'8", I agree with Previous comment about fit being as important as the calibre, get her to shoulder as many as possible

And, if I may add, Marg is pretty deadly with it too. She should have her own commemorative ammo box in 275 Wagner to compliment the new 366 Wagner packaging.
