Explain 9mm Ammo Options to a Newbie

IMHO, this topic has been beat to death for years now. With the rising cost of ammo and the uncertainty of sporadic availability, if you're approaching the benefits of reloading strictly from a financial perspective then you're missing the point of learning to reload in the first place.

The OP's question wasn't about reloading, though it is valid from a cost savings point.

9mm is usually in one of three grain weights. 115 (the original german loading) 124 (current NATO standard) and 147 (brought out by the FBI protocols)

From the point of view of reliability, the first two will be the best option on a stock pistol. As far as accuracy goes, every gun is an individual, and will have preferences. As far as recoil goes, there really isn't much to choose between them, though you will notice a difference with 147. Usually but not always the 115 and 124 will be a bit cheaper then the 147, as there's less metal going into it.

As far as brass or aluminum casing, it doesn't matter. If you had an older or used gun with a rusty/worn chamber, it might get grumpy with the aluminum, but otherwise, it cycles fine.

Go forth, find the cheapest you can find, and shoot lots while focusing on your fundamental skills and get better! have fun!
