When people say "tang safety", they're usually referring to a sliding safety on the top tang of the action, which is usually ambidextrous. Tang safeties are common on shotguns as well as some rifles (e.g., Browning A-Bolts, Savages, and older Rugers).

Here's a picture of a Ruger 77 with a tang safety:

Here's a picture of a Reuger 77 with a bolt or cocking piece safety:

a bit clearer pic of a tang safety (Savage):

theyre very convenient, however the Ruger cocking piece safety stickhunter posted above is really well designed: it rotates a solid bar of metal to block the trigger, and blocks the cocking piece as well.

Great pic of one of the most annoying safeties on the planet...The Savage tang safety.:p

^what am i missing?
its in an accessible/ergonomic/ambi position, highly visible, and 3-position - so you can lock the bolt in the rearmost position. whats so bad about it?

the rem safety lever in comparison is somewhat wiggly/flimsy, and only 2-position and you cant lock the bolt. this is reaching - but it could also potentially snag and disengage itself (not that id ever rely on a safety anyway - but some people do).

is the savage mechanism inferior somehow?

I have to say I like tang safeties as well. They just seem to be exactly were they should be. They operate intuitively, push and shoot. Many safeties don't get used because of thier silly positions like cross bolt safeties on levers and I simply detest the silly little push buttons on the trigger gaurd.

Many bolt gun safeties are excellent as well.

Personally I much prefer the tang safety on a Mossberg shotgun than the 870 trigger guard safety. I just find it automatic to bring the gun up while sliding forward to fire... I can see that it would be awkward with a pistol grip mounted though...
