explain upper/lower builds I see here..(ar)

Looking in the exchange section of the forum, I see a lot of rifles that seem to be miss matched. They will talk about the "lower" being one thing, and the "upper" being another.. and so on.

Can anyone explain to me why people have what appear to be hybrid ar's?

Ar's are modular. Typically, you can swap any upper with any lower. Often people build their guns from parts A) as a way to spread the cost out over time and, B) get exactly the configuration they want.

^ pretty much. sometimes it's cheaper to build your own too. and if you look for a good deal you're going to mix and match

All valid points.

Generally speaking and as long as quality parts are used, brand name "A" upper with brand name "B" lower is not usually a concern.

it's called the AR bug... You start with one plain AR and the next thing you know you'll have put more dough on mods than it's original value. You'll also have to get other ARs so your #### won't fall off...

Seriously, most (all..) guys mod their ARs to suit their taste/needs. And it's relatively easy to do.
