Extended Mag-Tube question: Is the bracket necessary?

Quick question guys...

Is the Extended Mag Tube bracket (binds the extension and barrel together) required?

What purpose does it serve... is it stress relief on the tube?

If the 5rnd limit is trashed I'd like to get a 4 shot extension as seen below but don't want to have the bracket if it isn't required.

hm..might be need because the tube may not be straight..

i have a 3 shot on my 870 and dont have a bracket...

Yeah, I just thought of this question as I remembered having an 870 with the extension + bracket and it would destroy the finish under both points (barrel and tube-extension)

If I were to do it again I think I'd skip the bracket altogether and get a nice sling mount such as the one you have under the cap (something similar).

lol..that mount is just for looks...tried a sling but gets in the f*cking way all the time.

The support is used to prevent the crap from bending the extension, but, more importantly, I find it aids in the accuracy of the shotgun by locking the barrel into the receiver.
