Extended Rail for MR1??¿

I was wondering if any of you know of any way of extending the top picatinny rail on the Benelli MR1. It will fit my EOtech perfectly, but I want another few inches to put a magnifier on.

Any idea?

I've tried finding one too, no luck. The RX4 had an extended, 2 piece rail that locked together but these are no longer available. The only thing I can see workable is to use a CX4 rail and cut it to fit. Fasteners may present a problem as far as clearance for the barrel and gas system.

I'll have to look into the CX4 parts. I was going to get the machinists at work take a look to see if they could conjure something up, but clearance is definitely the issue.

I'm going to pick up one of the rails and see how it works out. I've already made alterations and additions everyone said couldn't be done. I've got a lot of high quality machinery to help the matter, and quite a bit of incentive. If you're in the Calgary area maybe it's worth chatting about what can be done with these rifles to further the cause. If you've read any of the other threads, you'll know there's not a lot of love out there for this rifle. It's AR or nothing. The rifle deserves better than that and the AR isn't the end all be all of firearms.

Agreed. I am military and have to use an AR and it leave a lot to be desired, especially for the price point that you must pay on the civi street. I am in the Edmonton area so we're not too far off. What have you done to the rifle? Can you email me any pics to see what you've got done.

Otherwise, after looking at the rifle last night, I noticed a small indentation on the fore grip, right behind the front sight. It looks like it could be a mouting point, much like the ones that exist for the front tri rail. It doesn't look like there is much room for play however. Possibly if the rail was screwed in from the bottom up with a counter sunk screw, with a nut holing it in on the topside of the rifle?

The Beretta RX4 rail was two parts. The part connected to the handguard was fastened to that single point as you described and then clipped into the rear rail. That way, when disassembling, the forward rail remained attached to the handguard. If you're interested in the front accessory rail assembly, use the beretta CX4 mount. At least it's available, whereas the MR1 rail has never been available. They're exactly the same parts except the CX4 rail doesn't come with the capture nuts. I used extra Blackhawk Serpa holster screws as fasteners, works great with a little drillpress work. Also, I machined a Magpul rail to perfectly fit the contour of the bottom side of the handguard and again used Blackhawk capture nuts and screws. To this I mounted a Magpul angled forward grip. A bit of fiddling but worth it in the end. Clearance is not an issue at all. I also mounted an American Defense ADBP to one side rail (for attaching sling) and Surefire X300 to the other side. Bipod is Versa-Pod. Scope is Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite Tactical.

I don't know how to get photos on this forum, just started posting. Enjoy the MR1. I truly believe it's a step up from the AR, though they're not designed for the same use or conditions. Cheers!

Should have also mentioned the scope is mounted with an American Defense AD-RECON QD, reverse mounted. This brings the scope back to provide a far better eye relief. I also use an AIMPOINT T1 with American Defense AD-T1-10 QD mount.

I do agree both my MR-1s are fantastics rifles, my brother who own 2 AR is gonne sell one to get an MR-1, beein able to shoot them both in the same time, you can definetly feel the + of the MR-1, one was design for war, the other was design for fun with almost no maintenance and group size are the same for both... Cheers. JP.

Nice to see some friendly chat here. Maybe we won't get stomped on like other threads. No doubt someone will have to chime in and stir the pot, even if they've not even fired an MR1. Definitely nicer when things are kept civil.

That riser was my first attempt to mount a scope. While it moved the scope back far enough, it also moved the scope up enough that there was no face weld at all. You actually had to stretch your neck to use it, even with low rings. Using the ADM mount doesn't have this effect.

Thanks for the suggestion though.:)

That is a good idea for sure. Due to the MR1s drop butstock, I can definitely see how a cheek weld problem could occur. The thing that made me fall in love with the MR1 was the fact that it felt so good without having to do anything with the rifle. I see the AR as a honda civic with a spoiler, rims, exhaust and all those bells and whistles. Looks cool but you have to question the practicality of it. MR1 doesn't need a thing to feel good in the hands. Just so hapens, I had an EO tech laying around just asking to go on the MR1, but I plan on hunting some coyotes, thus wanting the magnifier attached as well.

On another note, now that One Shot piped in on this post, I want to extend my thanks to you guys. You sent me a sling over to Afghanistan, and when it arrived as the wrong model, you sent me the right one no questions asked. So thank you One Shot.

I like your comparison to the Honda. Some of the firearms I've seen must weigh 20 lbs with all the crap installed. The original AR was pretty light but as progress(?) has been made they've really porked out.
Try the ADM mounts if using a scope, they're pretty sweet. I just finished ripping the Bushnell off (too much scope for this rifle, don't know what I was thinking) and replaced it with the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24. This should work far better. Know how to post pictures?

Vortex makes a sweet scope. I'll have to see if one of the local shops carry one.

To post pics, you have to get an account at flickr or some other photo uploading site. Then you have to copy the link to these forums. I think there are instructions somewhere. I'll edit the post if I find it.
