Although the spring season ends on May 31, and I was fortunate enough to fill both tags this year, I have had 1 tom elude me all season, right on my home farm.
I last saw him on April 24th, the day before the season opened. Had him roosted, and then never saw him again until last week, after the season was closed of course.

I had been taking cell phone pics through the spotting scope in my kitchen, and decided to throw on some camo and go after him with the camera. I got some good pics on Friday morning, watched him again yesterday morning and evening, and heard him gobbling again this morning, so put on another stalk. Got within 6 yards.....way to close for the telephoto lens I was using, couldn't even focus on him at times!

I'm not selling my guns or turning vegan, but this catch and release photo hunting is (almost) better than a real hunt - less gear, no clean-up, and a great way to hone your skills in the off season.

Super fun to list to them spit, drum, gobble and drag their wingtips when you get close

You got some great pics there! That must be fun putting the sneak on a tom....but frustrating that it isn’t as easy during the season! Would be great if you are able to bag that boy in the fall or next spring and have all the photos of what he was in his full glory.

I'm learning how to use a Nikon D7500 with a 200-500mm lens on a 1.4X teleconverter. I was shooting bursts in "continuous shooting mode", and I swear that the rapid clicking of the shutter made him think another tom was in the fencerow I was hiding in.

Thanks, I'll have to query the camera and read about it.

Turkeys are beautiful birds...

Be careful, Scott... if you catch the "shutterbug" it can become an addiction.

If I won the lottery I would be on camera only hunts all the time after filling my tags. It never gets old for me as the sun is rising hearing and seeing what I’m hunting step out into view.

Glad you folks like those pics.

Greg, you’re right about the addiction. Getting the “perfect shot” is a real challenge.

Ive found that photo hunting is more difficult in some respects, like getting IN and back OUT without disturbing the wildlife. The exfil never really matters after the gun goes bang, but it sure does when you plan to photograph the same area or animal more than once.

Getting close, whether with a gun, stick and string, or camera is always such a rush, requiring some skill and lots of luck.its those brief moments that keep me coming back.
