Extending a barrel

I was just wondering what is involved with making a S/W.38 snub into something that a person who does not have a 12(6) or what ever the number is,that I do not have.
-can the barrel be extended to 4 and a bit.
-what is the cost if possible

P.s The reason I ask is the father-in-law as one and I am the only person in the family who shoots.

The gun would have to have the barrel changed to a 5 or 6 inch, unless you go custom to 4 1/2", but you can't keep the snub barrel.

You can keep the snub bbl if you lathe it out and install a barrel liner that is 106mm long or longer. Don;t even think of trying this at home though...

Claven2, thats exactly what I'm having done to a ruger security 6, it had a 4" barrel and its getting bored out and a 4 1/2" liner is getting installed.
