Has anyone ever taken a BLR mag apart and attempted to extend it? Does anyone make these?? Just thinking about the possibility of having a 10, 15, or 20 round mag for my BLR. Just because.

sunray, are you ever right?

There is no max for the capacity of a mag for a centre fire rifle so long as they are not designed for a semi-auto rifle, in which case the capacity is 5.

To the OP, I haven't heard of this but I was looking for the same for my 7600.

"d. These restrictions do not apply to rim-fire rifles, M-1 Garand rifles and other rare and historically valuable magazines that have been specifically exempt, plus non semi-automatic rifles (pump, lever or bolt-action)...."

CFSC Student handbook, Page 126.

It specifically references a Part 4 of "Regulations prescribing certain firearms and other weapons, components " as well as "parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as prohibited or Restricted

I would believe that modifying the magazine of a non-semi-automatic firearm in order to increase capacity would technically be legal. However, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I don't dare think what the Conservation Officer would say if he were to inspect such a modification while you were out hunting.

It is possible, in theory anyways. It most likely requires fabricating an entire now magazine shell, as well as a follower spring. About all you'd be able to use would be the floorplate/follower. A welded/bubba'd/hackjob extension, I would imagine, would lead to all sorts of failure-to-feeds.

hard to extend a mag for a gun that attaches to a hinged floor plate. MAYBE on an older one with an all steel clip. but it would be hard. the pressure from the spring on the follower would have to be just right for it to feed properly. you would also have to find a way to weld on a extra box onto the bottom of the mag. to much work for to little gain. if you need more than 5 rounds... you need to get a range membership...

A little like talking #### about the guys that want an extended tube for their shotguns.

If it's what they want, and they ain't up to no good doin' it, power to 'em! Lots of fun in just going to the range, so, as long as there are no laws against it, bad idea or no, it's legal.

There is a magazine tinkering and building sub-forum on the homegunsmith.com site. Might be worth a look. Set the display settings to "the beginning" and take a look at the goodies there. It'll give you some idea what goes into a mag that works, anyways. There are (were?) some pictures of some nice press dies made in someones shop, for short run manufacturing using a benchtop or stand up style hydraulic press as the power source.

Years ago I stacked 2 winchester 69a mags together,
removed the top floor plate and joined the springs together,
Worked fine, But that is no BLR.
Anything is possible with too much time on yours hands.

If you took the mag cut it and added a piece of gauge metal in between, gently tigged or mig it back together and added a longer spring. Shouldn't be that big of a deal. I'd try it but don't see the need to chop up my spare 80.00 mag. I may try it with a sav 110 mag I have.
