Extra Full chokes

Briley rates their factory replacement chokes for steel only up to Improved Modified.

As you can see from this table, Improved Modified can be considered to be equivalent to Extra Full when used with steel.

There is nothing to be gained from using an Extra Full choke with steel and you run the risk of damaging the choke and barrel. Don't do it!

According to the charts supplied here, I should be going the other way. First solid bit of info gained so far. Thanks.

I wouldn't use that tight a choke for steel. If it is tight patterns you are after try a patternmaster choke. I can't believe these chokes (patternmaster) are not well known. I get 18- 20" patterns with buck shot at 35 yards with these chokes. If you use one piece wads they are awesome! Try one and you will become a believer!

Regards,
Mike

Mike,
the patternmaster are known, its just the wad wizzards work a bit better. :)

EDIT: Ruger man if you want tighter patterns, spend one hundred bucks on a wad stripping choke. Thats if they make em for your gun.

I just picked up a new Browning BPS with the Invicta choke inserts and when I looked at them I noticed one of the choke tubes said something like "cylinder/lead, modified/steel". As well my smith suggested opening up the full choke on my old Wingmaster to modified if I was going to shoot steel. Had him ream it to mod.
Dont want to find out the hard way it doesnt work. I hate shopping for new barrels...

There are aftermarket chokes which are designed to shoot steel through at full and extra full constrictions, Terror .675 or Trulocks Super Waterfowl chokes. I have shot many rounds of #3 - BB Fasteel through a Terror .675 and have never had swelling in either my Benelli or Beretta. I've tried the PM and WW but the Terror .675 remains my go to choke when having to shoot tall.

Colonial Arms as well...I've shot hundreds of rounds through an extra-full steel on a Winchester 1300 and it patterns VERY tight. I'm a big fan.

Rugerman:
You dont always get the tightest pattern when using steel with the tightest choke.

For example;

I found in my one shotgun I had to use my Improved Cylinder tube to get 70% in 30"@40yds when using steel BB's.

In another I got good patterns using a modified tube while using Steel BB's.

In yet another instance I found steel #2's to pattern best with a Improved Modified tube.

Start with your most open choke and go pattern your shotgun at 40yds.

look for the tightest pattern with a lack of voids.

I'll wager you'll stop long before you even get to using your Extra Full.

Why tight chokes don't work was explained to me like this.

Ever seen ball bearings bounce on a hard surface? that's sort of what happens with steel shot if it gets over choked, it simply does not deform, but actually sort of bounces off each other piece of shot, thus making for poor patterns.

Then there is the pressue issue when over constricting shot that does not deform, keep that one in the back of your mind.
