So I finally shot off my first batch of 9mm ammo!!! I was a little scared at first but it went bang and I'm still alive. Lol anyways my question to all is I made a batch of 100rds to see how it goes and out of 100 I would say that 10 cases didn't extract... Also the rounds that did extract wasn't launching out, they were just dropping out??? I was always told when reloading start with min powder what ever the manual says and that I did! Does this problem indicate that I should put a little more powder???

A little more detail, load info including powder, weight, bullet, caliber and gun info.

Sounds like they were at the minimum powder charge therefore not enough energy to extract and eject (for the recoil spring weight you have in the gun).

I would agree, sounds like not quite enough powder in a few, are you using a powder drop device by chance? some dont drop certain powders consistantly and jam up and only give off half especially with shotgun/pistol powders like 700x, 800x, red dot, blue dot, green dot etc. Ive got a lee powder measure and i took it apart, trimmed down all the leading edges of the measurer insides that made it more consistant but still not 100% exact but within .3 of a grain.

seconded! sounds very much like more powder is needed.

just fill the case with powder and they will extract :) (that's a joke by the way...)

5.7grs should be giving you a good recoil. I think theres something with your gun. what gun are shooting?

ya, you need to be more specific. what exact powder and what bullet weight?
just checked a bottle of HS6 and it says 6.8 for a 124gr and on the titegroup bottles it says 4.8gr for 115gr.
5.7gr of HS6 would be hot for 147gr, and min load for 115gr.

My advice for your future reloading, so take it or leave it. When I start a new round of load development I typically won't load up 100 rounds with one powder measure. I typically will load 4-5 at one one charge, then 4-5 at an slightly increased charge, etc, etc... I mark the cases with a colour code, or just place each batch in carefully marked bags to keep all the different charges separate. At the range then take out the bags and one at time load and fire. It's usually handy to have a log book with you so you can examine the brass and put down a few notes one each load as you fire them. Then when your done you should have your answer as to what powder charge you and more importantly your particular firearm likes.

Also, if your reloading 9mm specifically, be very careful with OAL and powder charges. The typical OAL can vary quite a bit based on bullet and firearm you are using. You a crimp good enough to ensure bullet setback does not happen while the cartridge is loading from the magazine. Pressures in the 9mm can spike into the danger zone really really quickly.

Again, just my $0.02

Sorry for late response guys... It was HS-6. 5.7gr for 115 gr bullet? The max was reading 6.4 in the hornaday manual... Jaws man I like your advice and will take it! Thank you! I'm shooting a glock 34 gen 4 and had no problems with it before and like I mentioned it was my first batch. I'm on a hornady AP press

I second this two cents. Trial and error, keep notes, TAKE THE TIME to figure out EXACTLY what you want to do, then set up full production, and only then.

I got the darnedest idea that you came across a recommended load and set to loading it, assuming it was the load you were looking for... gotta try a little harder than that.

ALSO, some of your loads were too lightly 'powdered' (lol); the remedy for this is to develop a rhythm and always be watching that what you think you're accomplishing is actually happening. When loading many rounds at a time errors can happen easily, and often. Practice practice practice, and pay attention to everything. Be watchful.

Don't mean to be curmudgeonly, but ya just can't jump in the deep end (IMHO). Take the time, bit at a time, until you're confirming that what you're doing is getting you the results you're after.

Also asking questions helps. Which you just did here; thanks for the opportunity to be helpful.

i knew it!

according to hodgdon's site your way below the starting point of 6.4gr of hs-6 for a 115gr bullet, they list the max at 6.9gr.
