Well I found a wonderful rifle today on consignment at a gunshop in Tisdale SK. It looks like a CDL style Rem stock on a Rem action with an ER Shaw barrel with muzzle break in 7x57 with a Leupold scope. They want 1250 I believe. Should I or shouldn't I??? Can anyone tell me about ER Shaw?

well its a perfectly fitted break. I guess all the work was done at the ER shop. Still wanting to figure out some things about ER. I've checked their website but I was hoping to find some info from "CGN'ers" if anyone has had any personal exprience with the barrels.

I don't get the need for a break on a 7X57, but you have to decide what the rifle is worth to you, no one else can decide that. I could ask if they would allow a 3 day inspection period during which time you could see if it shot or not. A 7X57 isn't hard on barrels.

Depends quite a bit on the scope, I think. If it is $600 of scope and you like the gun, then you might well have a deal. If its a Rifleman, then they're asking a lot of money.

The custom barrel doesn't really add any value, if a CDL in excellent used condition would be $7-800 this would be $8-900.

A muzzle brake on a mild recoiling cartridge like the 7x57 takes so much value away from the gun to me it's worth nothing to me. It would also depend on which model of scope it is.

I also agreet that the muzzle brake is a big turn off. Depending on the length of the barrel, the brake could be cut off or unscrewed and replaced with a proper fitting threaded sleeve.

I agree with the others about the brake. I see real disadvantages to a brake, especially on a rifle that shouldn't need one at all. I would not want it for that reason alone.

For me there are two issues - the muzzle brake and the price. If you are looking to spend that kind of money then hold out for something like a Brno 21H/F in 7x57.

Yes the scope is a VX III but I went back and looked at it today and the barrel doesn't actually fit in the stock and I agree the break on a 7x57 is like putting one on a 22 250. I guess I was just extremely interested the barrel.

Another vote for NO. Because of the muzzle break I wouldn't even look any further at it.

I'll add another "WTF" on the brake. You'd have to be a real jam-tart to have to brake a 7x57. Could be a nice rifle, especially if the barrel is long enough to hive off the brake and recrown it.
