F/A bolt/carrier in an 11.5" ar ???

Do i have to use a F/a bolt or can i get away with a S/a in an 11.5 " factory upper.I have used s/a in 14.5" uppers but heard that Full auto full circle bolts are more reliable in 10.5 or 11.5 " uppers ?? comments
 
I believe the heavier...and therefore slower 'cyclic' rate, help to make the shorter barreled guns run more reliably.
As noted by Greentips, it also depends on using the correct buffer....
 
If the manufacturer built the gun correctly in the first place then there is no need (or difference) using a F/A as opposed to an S/A Bolt Carrier.

The actual weight difference is marginal. It may look cool but it won't make today's guns "run better".

RRA makes 7" and 10.5" guns and ONLY sells them with S/A carriers and they work great.

LMT makes 10.5" and they work great with S/A carriers.

Greentips nailed it... gas port, buffer, etc. are what matters.

Dangertree has been telling everyone this for a long time too.

I have run a thousand rounds through my 10.5" LMT using

1. Standard S/A carrier
2. M16 Carrier
3. JP enterprises ( splits the difference between the above two in weight )

They ALL run just as reliably

If you have a M16 carrier than I guess it wouldn't hurt but I certainly wouldn't run out and get one

I agree, my 11.5" aramlite uses a S/A bolt carrier and was built by a guy at wolverine. I have fired about 2500 rounds on it and have had no issues at all, great little rifle.
 
Myth....

I ran a Colt Sporter AR15 Bolt Carrier Group in my 7.5" Pistol upper, Using AR15 buffer tube and not a heavy one or a 9mm and a regular gas tube and never had short stroking problems ETC.
 
I just built a new 11.5" AR. I swapped both a standard S/A and M-16 carriers and didn't notice a real difference in performance/reliability. The key component I found was the buffer. Opting for a heavier H, H1 or H2 buffer made all the difference. You don't want to go heavier than you really need, however, since you don't want your rifle to start short stroking, or failing to lock back after last round is fired.
