I'm looking to build a custom rifle to compete in F Class events. I'd like to have it chambered in 6.5 x 47. I've done some reading and research, and the components I'm considering are:

Stock - Robertson composite
Action - Bat
Trigger - Jewell
Barrel - Broughton
Optics - Nightforce

Obviously the components are a personal choice, but can I order all the above and simply have a decent local gunsmith assemble the rifle? What do I have to take into consideration for the build? Ie stock inletting for the action, type of bedding, reaming of the barrel???! Sorry, I know these may seem like simple questions, but I am hesitant to go ahead with a custom build if I can't access a local gunsmith who could complete the build.

Thanks for any help !

Of course you could buy all the parts and have them assembled into a rifle. First thing to do would be to find a local gunsmith with the skill and experience to assemble a specialized first class target rifle using expensive components.
Not all gunsmiths are in this league.
There certainly are 'smiths who could be trusted with this work. Whether there is such a 'smith in your area, who knows?

Use a gunsmith whose work in building quality F-Class rifles is well known. If that gunsmith is local, great, but if you can't find one, then don't be afraid to look at other 'smiths across the country. Their prices will probably be similar, and all it might cost you is some extra shipping. You can have the best components in the world, but if those aren't put together properly, you won't have a rifle that will be worthy of those parts.

I just had a 6.5x47 built by a well known gunsmith. I collected all the parts and when I was ready I called up the smith and had him assemble the whole package.

I used Mick McPhee out of Kamloops BC. You can do a search on him and Im positive you wont ever read a bad thing about the guy.

I was very happy with his work and his price.

He strictly builds target rifles, not hunting rifles.

F-class

McPhee put mine togethier and he does excellent work , nice list of components , hope you have a lot of patience Bat actions and Robertsons stocks take a long time to get your hands on , good luck :D

If you were looking for a tactical type rifle I would have recommended either of ATRS or Tac-Ord depending on which side of the country you are on. If, as you say, you are looking for an F-Class rig I would have to agree with the others and recommend M. McPhee. I don't have one of his rifles, but have seen many of them at F-Class matches and they are absoulutely first class.

Based on another thread you may have to re-choose your stock. It would appear, unfortunately, that you may not be able to source a Robertson at the moment. I will vouch for the quality of Tac Ord work, I've been very impressed with everything he's done for me.

6,5by47 LAPUA

You have picked a great cartridge it will shine at shorts out 700 but will have trouble against the 7mm at 800 & 900m if there is conditions, no wind I would put money on the 6.5 by 47 .but if you learn to read the wind it will take you to the winners circle.
Like others have said Mc Fee is a fine smith seen his work top notch.

I know this fellow in Texas watch him build a 6.5by 47 Lapua if your build shoots half as good as this one you will be pleased

Thanks for the input everyone! And I was worried I wouldn't get much of a response!

Looks like I'm headed in the right direction. I have no problem waiting a few months for the parts I want. Hopefully not too long...

I live in BC so looks like I'll be calling Mr. McPhee. Very glad to hear the positive remarks about him.

Can anyone tell me what kind of smithing costs I'm looking at for having the rifle built?

Mad_mikee can you tell me what components you used in your build? Would you suggest anything different for my proposed build?

Again, thanks for the help everyone!

Dont forget that Ian of Robertson composites puts together a pretty mean stick too. May also speed up the stock process too :)?????

There are several very talented gunsmiths that can build a superbly accurate rifle.

I am curious on the decision to go 6.5X47L. Why?

Nice looking rig Mad_Mikee. Like the stock color.

Mystic, I have a stock Rem 700 with HS precision stock in .308 . I thought about customizing it but the 6.5x47 sounds like a more accurate and efficient cartridge.

Mad_mikee how do you find yours at 500 m and out? Everything I've read so far indicates that it is one of the best.

When I order a barrel, do I need to specify 6.5 x 47 or will the smith do the chambering? Or do I simply order a 6.5mm 1:?? twist etc...?

Also, if I order a Robertson stock, and a Brougton barrel, and a Bat action, would a smith like Mick McPhee be able to do the stock bedding and inletting if needed? Guess I should probably chat with some smiths before I shell out for components.

Order a 6.5 barrel and the smith will chamber it for the action.

If you plan on shooting LR you want a fast twist barrel, likely a 1:8 twist. You will stabilize the 123g pills well, prolly not the 140s though.

A good stock won't need any extra inletting. But the smith can touch it up if needed and they can bed it to your action as well.

Speak to a smith and they can let you know what they will charge you, but those all all standard services for a custom build.

I'd skip the custom action and get your 700 built out. A good smith can do magic with a basic 700....plus you can put the cash you save into the rest of the components. I have a 6.5x47 I had built by Henry Remple in Cgy this spring, similar set up as what you're looking at. The thing can out shoot my skills by a mile. Had a friend who shoots competitively give it a try and WOW is all I can say.

Buy the BAT, you'll keep it all your life. You don't and you'll regret it later.

If its a budget issue, well, buy what you can afford. Nothing wrong with a Remington, but its no BAT.

I love the bat action. It's a work of art, and with a pic rail built in, it's a nice combo. I just hope a smith near me is capable of doing a good job with the bedding and any inletting of the stock I choose.

I am somewhat puzzled by the barrel and action choices. Broughton website looks like I can choose the calibre and blank or finished length??
Also the bat website shows a gazillion different actions - different lengths etc... Will have to make a few calls to make sure I order everything right for the 6.5 x 47.

krieger 8.5 twist will stabilize 130 grain berger vlds, if you do go with a bat action then you can have the barrel threaded and chambered with your reamer of choice before you recieve the action... they're spec'd out with the same thread/tenon. Something you might want to consider is the fact that robertson composites is shutdown right now, hopefully it is a temporary thing as I was hoping to buy myself a GBF stock in the near future.

While a tremendous amount can be done with the Remington 700 action I would not dissuade someone from going the custom action if they wish. A Remington will never be as smooth as a custom and skimping here may leave you with a permanent reminder that you never got what you really wanted.
