F Class OPEN Cartridge

What distance are you shooting? If it is less than 800m 6 Dasher, but if it is up to 800 and more a 284 (7mm) should suffice. The most optimal would be less recoil with the highest BC (ballistic co-efficient).

Out of that list i personaly like the 284win and have built an F-open rifle chambered in that. Shooting 180gr bullets at 2800

Although the brass im using is 6.5x.284 and that seems like it would be a nice round to work with.

I also like the 6.5x47 and some day want to build a rilfe in tjat caliber.

6.5-284 and stuff the new Sierra 150’s in it will run with the 7’s. I run a 280ai shooting the 180 hornady ELD M at a cool 2840fps and they shoot lights out. Soon as weather get nicer will be testing the Berger 184’ and running them @ 2900-2950 as that’s wer the old 180 hybrids shot the best before.

serious question for you

Are you looking to compete or just play at the local range

the answer is different depending on use,

I am not kidding, just trying to give you the best answer for your intended use

also your long range experience makes a little difference in my recommendation

Pros and Cons of these cartridges used in F Class OPEN ; Which one and why would you go with it ? :d

6.5 x 47 Lapua
6.5 x .284 Norma
6.5 GAP (6.5 RSAUM )
284 Win
284 Shehane
7 mm RSAUM
7 mm WSM
7 mm x 300 WSM

Cheers RJ

Gotta say it also depends on the ranges your going to be shooting at. If your serious about competing at long range run atleast a 284 or shehane and if you dont mind higher recoil over the course of a match shoot the 300wsm. The 300 is easy to tune and flat out shoot but its a hole different beast then just shooting a 284. The 7-300 and 7saum shoot well but you will sacrifice alot of barrel life. If you ever come out to Nokomis our range is dominated by the 284win/300wsm.

I spent almost five years trying to get a 7-300WSM to shoot consistently (2009-2013). it was one of most frustrating experiences of my life.

I fought that gun while qualifying for the 2013 Canadian national F Class team, and competed with it at the world championships in Raton, NM. I never did get it to work the way I hoped and my scores reflected that.

I sold that gun as soon as I was home from the worlds and changed calibers to .284 Winchester. It's like night and day. Easy to tune, softer on the shoulder and generally stress free. It's also far more accurate than I was ever able to achieve with a 7-300.

I wish I had never been so foolish as to build and fight with that 7-300WSM. I would never recommend a 7-300WSM to anyone, not even my worst enemy.

The most accurate rifle I own is a 6BR. It's incredible inside 600m but gives up too much to the cannons out at 1000 to be trruly competitive unless you are a jedi level wind reader.

6.5x47 is also an extremely accurate cartridge but it suffers from the same issue as the 6BR. Not enough gas in heavy winds at 1000 to be competitive. Would I use one at a 300m match, you bet your a** I would and have with great success.

Agreed, I had a 6.5x47L and a .284 Shehane when I shot F-Class. I could and did clean 800m with the 6.5, and then go to 900 and it just fell apart.

although I have a 284Win, the 284 Shehane is where it's at......

Here is a good synopsis, it speaks for itself:

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2012/05/284-shehane-284-improved-for-long-range/

If I could afford to spend more money on my rifle, I would add the 284 Shehane barrel.... although my 284Win is so friggin accurate, the extra with the Shehane chambering does add to the far distance end of things, high BC 7mm bullets, and adds up to about 3.3grs of case capacity, allowing higher fps of up to 2950 or a tad more.... H4181SC seems to be the G T powder... apparently you can go faster with RL17 and N560

Why do F-open shooters use larger cartridges than other 1000 yard bench rest disciplines? 6 Dasher and 6BRA is dominating in those circuits, and making a big splash in PRS. Just curious why F-Open shooters trend to larger cartridges, while other disciplines are finding excellent results using the smaller 6mm's.

i guess they like shooting the big cal and that the only place in ont we can shoot long range is in competition

One possible reason is we only get 2 convertible sighters before each string, so we can't fire off 10 rounds to gauge the wind before going on score. Just a guess.
