f class rules.....

I was actually adding the mbrship fees, but those prices are astounding. Unless one brings the wife and kids and makes a vacation of it, I can

Oh I remember the Smith's Falls girls. Boy, do I ever. ;)

Of course, the girls there now are no doubt the daughters of the ones I knew, 1986 was the last year I shot TR there. :D

Man, we didn't know how good we had it - shooting Bisley and CFRC back to back, all expenses paid. :)

You must have been a cadet back in 86 to get the free ride to Bisley and the CFRC. They still get the free trip, along with free ammo and some of the best rifles and gear, us tax payer can afford. Too bad most of them don't stick with shooting, once their cadet days are over.

Connaught Range really isn't a place for a family vacation, but with Ottawa a few minutes down the road there is plenty to see and do.

Cost is my number one deterent. flight out, hotel, transport, entry fees. I am looking at around $1500 when the dust settles IF I can get deals on everything.

A Western Can shoot would be ideal but entry fees like that are going to be a huge deterent.

I hoping that next year I can shoot at the big one at Volkes. The long weekend really puts a damper on chances due to family time. Entry fees are substantially lower but you are still getting close to $1000 once you account for accom etc.

I have heard shooters whine about going to a Kamloops event where entry is $75? and $50 in gas (less as you should car pool). Time is one big problem but cost is more likely the mental block.

Definitely run the F(M) class. Keep it simple and keep out all those semi customs or mondo long barreled rigs. Maybe it will work, maybe it will not but if it becomes perseved as another money pit, it will surely die in the eyes of the novice.

yep.

Now that I think about it, it was 1987 that I went to Bisley.

Yes, it was with the cadets. Great program. 20 years and, what 20 cadets per team....that's 400 world class shooters since I was there in '87. Maybe you guys should be recruiting hard among that group.

I will join my PRA and shoot some F class matches this summer, but it is very unlikely I will pay that much to shoot the CFRC.

Jerry,
Much of the cost for entry fees for the CFRC goes to the markers wages, accom and meals. Those girls do a great job, but they aren't cheap. If a Western Canada F Class shoot, run with competitor marking to reduce entry fee would fly, why not try it?

Viper7,
Don't think we haven't tried to recruit from the cadet ranks. One of the stubbling blocks is that these kids think that need an RPA to shoot. They won't lower themselves to shoot a Musgrave, Remington or a Savage or heaven forbid a Sportco. See what happens when we spoil those little brats:p
Cost is the other factor. Not too many 18 year old kids have the money to continue on with the sport once the free ride is gone. Some parents would think nothing of dropping $2000-$5000 year for Johnny to play travel hockey. Shooting isn't something that parent are willing to support.:bangHead:

Glen,
Why not have a western Canada F class Championship? Maybe the DCRA will even support it.

I for one would love to see a Western Canadian F Class Championship match and I would even support it $$$ wise (what I can afford) if the DCRA will not. I hope the DCRA will support it and even offer the Lt Gov. and Gov General medals to the Fclass shooters too, like they do in TR in Ottawa each year!

We could have it at Nokomis SK (center of Canada, so approx equal drive for all provinces) or even at Homestead AB, at the same time as the CFRC in Aug and since it is FClass, we could use 1/2 moa targets.... Sounds alot like the Annual Fclass Driller's Match I'm trying to get up and running, already setup for Aug 25-26 this year at Nokomis SK.

We only have 6 targets but with 3 or 4 relays, we could make it work... and our range does go out to 1200 yds. If I park my RV at the south fence line and block her up so the wind does not toss it around too much, pairs of shooters could get on top of it and shoot 1 mile too! (1200 yds to the fence goes down in elevation, so you need something up pretty high to see the targets)

In the old days, it was a real big deal to win the Provincial's and get a Lt Gov Medal, you even made the front page news in those good ol' days (turn of century to about the late 40's) I think we have to get the papers to cover the Provincial and National level matches again, and make a big deal out of it again. It would give us more exposure and we may even get a few more shooters out of it.

Kodiak99317,
I don't think the DCRA would support it, if it conflicted with the CFRC. I was thinking something along the lines as a pre-CFRC. Maybe enough money could be generated by the match to pay travel to the CRFC for the top 2-3 shooters, or the top shooter from each province. Maybe use it as a qualifier for funds for the following years CFRC.
From what I have heard F class shooters will be squaded with other F'ers to allow the use of the new 1/2 MOA bull.

Maynard,

So let me get this straight, the DCRA has only one match per year.... the CFRC ....and they insist that no other matches exist in Aug so the DCRA can try to make enough money to support themselves for the whole year??? Is this correct? Could this be why the cost of this match is so high? So if I guy camped and eat in the back of his truck and got his kid to pull his targets (no markers wages, accom and meals), does the entry fees go down??? I know it does not. Nothing is for free anymore. The DCRA has to pay for the range use and reserves a block of rooms for travellers so this is part of the costs/entry fees, plus there are cooks to pay, drivers, cleaners, etc.

I see nothing wrong with the Driller's match running in Aug myself, it gives those with "less deep" pockets (This F'er included) a match to shoot in at least and something to do in Aug.

With most of the PRA's running their Prov. champ matches end of July or early Aug., I do not see when you could have this "Pre-CFRC" match, except in Aug...

Keith,
Another thing to remember is some of these F'ers travel with the TR teams from across the pond. Since the DCRA is already running a large match and could handle up to about 500 shooters, why split it up? Everything is already in place with concerns for squadding, markers, prizes, accom, range staff and such.
I like the idea of your Driller's Match, it does give the shooters that are not going to the CFRC a time and place for shooting. This will work for the western shooters, however the shooters from Ont, PQ and the Atlantic will stop in Ottawa.
If the CFRC had 500 shooters attending every year, I am sure the price of admission would go down. If you think the price of the CFRC is shocking, look at the cost for a Bilsey team member. That's all out of pocket expence.

Viper7,
Sorry I can't claim to have coined "F'ers". I think one year the Canadian F Class team called themselves the "Old F'ers". I do remember some very funny meetings about naming some of the F Class. F(O) at one time was going to be F(U) unlimited. It was decided the F(O) was less personal the F(U). :D

I hear you about the costs and the fact it is setup already for 500+ shooters in Ottawa, and people are already coming, and I would love to go, (would be great to see everyone) but 2 weeks is too long when you only have 3 wks (family gets some too) and too much money in entry fees.
