F**k'n Porcupines!

Yikes! I had an uncle with two Huskies east of Edmonton, man did those dogs LOVE to go after porcupine. This pictures reminds me of the ones he took when he was at the vet. Why those dogs kept going after them, I'll never know. Maybe the quill-beards are fancied among the female dogs? The money he spent on getting his dogs fixed up every year though... could have had a new truck...
I take my rotties to the UofS vet school. Basically students working directly with the animals with the oversight of a certified vet.
Anywooo, both my rotties have had run-ins with porcupine. The clinic knocked the dog out and pulled the quills for under $200 per dog.

I would definitely use some plywood or a nice new $350 tire as bait.

This guy was marching straight toward my truck last fall while hunting, enough to make me nervous about parking anywhere in the area after the stories I'd heard of them eating tires.

Years ago we dismantled a building up at Mica Dam and the porkypines were quite thick up there.
One of the lads working on the project had his Doberman up there with him and he had a hate on
for the pricklie toads.
Dang dog killed the pin cushion. Rolled it over and attacked it's thoat.
The battle between dog and owner was incredible. He would let a couple get pulled and then show
his teeth. The owner growled back and on went the battle.
Took a few days of grunt to get the dog looking somewhat normal again.

Third, trust me; I am laughing at this #### too, but I am looking for info to kill these little pricks; I need to know what to use for bait so I can set traps at the stand entrance, ladder etc. There has to be someone out there that knows what these little buggers will go to for bait.

And before any smartass suggests "a plywood treestand for bait", I know already! LMAO :D

hmm, have you tried plywood?
oh, wait

Ok... so I thank everyone for your replies, but I will add the following comments...

First, I am a little hurt that you won't lend me the Nos dog Jay... I thought we were tight.... :p

Second, I cannot remove my stand or re-build as I have too much time invested in materials etc; so I'd like to take care of the problem rather than change approach...

Slug.
Paint your Treestand with an oil based stain, the cheapest you can find from Canadian Tire. The porky's don't like the taste and won't eat you out of house and home......or at least your Treestand. Paint it between seasons so the smell from the stain has time to dissipate before your next hunt.

if its private land a licenced NWCO or the land owner would be allowed to remove them. if its crown land, use the three 'S' treatment as there is no legal way of trapping or killing them.

ive heard a live trap baited with a rag soaked in salt brine is pretty good.

Try putting out a block of salt. Old Porky will think he's died and gone to McSalt Heaven. The salt may keep him out of your plywood blind. They sure like the glue in plywood.
