I am building a rifle in 308 to shoot in the precission rifle class and Mabey try F/tr, the rifle I am shooting now is a steevens 200 in 243 sitting in a b&c stock with a timiny trigger, so I just need to screw on a new bbl right? This is where I am stumped, on twist and length both of will depend on bullet choice, so my questions are , what bullet and why, what twist, and what length of barrel, this rifle will prob be only shot at the range so weight will only be a factor in the f/tr class where it will have to be under the class limit. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks shooter

One of the biggest thing is making the final weight when choosing a barrel length and contour. Also take into account all the accessories you wanted to put on the rifle (ie bipod, scope, rail and rings) they all add up. I personally shoot 1-10 twist because that's the only spare barrel I have and I always like to shoot as heavy bullet as the rifle would permit.

A 30 inch Krieger light Palma contour weighs about 4.5 lbs. 30" Medium Palma about 5.5 lbs and the 30" heavy Palma goes about 6.5 lbs.

So whatever your rifle weighs without a barrel fitted should give you an idea on how heavy you can go with a new barrel. Note that these are approx weight of Krieger contours.

If you want a prefit, a bull 28" or a varmint 30" should fit in your weight

10 or 12 twist covers most of the uses. Alot of shooters are in the 155/155.5 or 185gr weight range. Some shoot 175's. Fewer the 208/210s - the 12 twist should still work but some prefer the 10 twist just to be sure.

Let me know if I can help.

Jerry
