I am getting close to ordering a Fabarm Asper o/u in 9.3x74 any members here have any experience with them good or bad ? I have handled one before, so I am mostly concerned about reliability.

I have never owned one but what I do know is that they have fixed soldered barrels, so you will have to find out what the gun was regulated for and match that load. I assume you know what regulation means (both barrels shooting to the same point of impact) They also use inertia to #### the second barrel, this is uncommon in double rifles. What this means is If the first barrel does not fire for what ever reason the second barrel will not be cocked and will not fire... some inertia cocking guns will #### the second barrel when the safety is cycled I don't know if the Asper will do this.

Other guns in this price range to look at would be the Verney Carron over under (from Tradex he has pics and prices) a Blaser Over (adjustable regulation) under the Brno (I have one in 9.3x74rX2 and Whole sale sports has some in stock they have adjustable regulation) the older Valmet O/U also with adjustable regulation.

I am not an expert on double rifles but I own a few and hand load for them let me know if you need more information.

The previous fellow hit it on the head, find out what the gun is regulated for? My Merke Cape gun came regulated for Norma 232gr Vulcan's, now this is the most expensive bullet weight in the 9.3's(also rare to find by most north american manufacture's), make sure it is regulated with the common 286 grainers. You can then buy cheap bulk soft points and get in alot practice.

I am having a mould made so I can practice with my gun, so as to be perfectly competent with it at all hunting ranges. The 9.3x74R is much gentler than my 375 H&H, amazing for such a light gun!

The inertia cocking would have me worried if you are planning on any expensive big game trips, but would not worry me if you are just going to hunt deer/moose with it. I would really reconsider if you are a bear hunter. I have several BRNO combo's in differrent calibre/gauges, and have found they are the most beefy reliable combo/doubles on the market for the price. Don't settle for whats available at your local store, really have a good look around before you put you money down. Also talk to a few guys/gals who actually have and use there doubles for hunting.

good luck, Dale Z!

Just a little tech terminology. The over and under rifles are classified as an "express rifle". A side by side is called a "double rifle." Not long ago Ceasar Guerini also manufactured an express rifle with an adjustable regulation barrel in the said cartridge. The Shooting Edge in Calgary has a Fabarm Asper for sale at this moment in the 9.3x74R, at least a couple weeks ago it was there.

I've followed the double rifle forum on the Accurate Reloading website for years now. It is very active, and populated by a large number of experienced owners and users of double rifles of all types, especially big bores. I have never seen this distinction made regarding the use of double rifle terminology.

I have always read that an "express rifle" is a rifle firing a light-for-caliber bullet (usually a large bore) at higher than normal velocities. A double rifle, whether SxS or OU, is a double rifle...same as a double shotgun.

The only comment that I can make regarding your concern about reliability is that I own two Fabarm shotguns and never had a problem with them. The reason I purchsed them is that they are a quality made product. They are manufactured from an Itailian firearm company, not made by Savage. Have confidence in their reliability.

I have order a Asper oiled from The Shooting Edge should have it by Friday from all I have read it should do everything I will ask of it. I have a feeling every thing I shoot at in the future will have two holes in it.

LOL, yes, your days of one-shot kills are probably over! Always put an insurance shot into deer and antelope...it's the dead ones that kill you! :)

I received my Asper yesterday, WOW I am blown away by the quality of this gun, the test target has two holes 5/8 of and inch apart [50 meter] I have handled and shot Beretta's Caesar Guerini's Kreigoffs and own several Citori's and this Fabarm has the same quality feel to it, can't wait to get it to the range!!
