factory 30-06 rounds for bear

I should be getting my new 30-06 hunting rig any day now and will soon get it broken in and sighted for the approaching spring bear season :D

but I'm not sure what I should be using. definatly be going for 180 grains though.

I poped by the local wall mart today and they had Winchester powerpoints and Ballistic Silvertips. but were out of the rem core lokts in 03-06. I think the Can tire might have those though.

are any of these good enough or should I be making a trip across town to a gun store looking for something better?
 
if you were not so far away id help you make your own medicine...as im a avid user of the 30-06..i would go with 180 grain partitions..
but as you said scott....your new at this ...neaver be afraid of checking out making up your own reloads...
once you see how easy it is...you will lust it
 
I shot a few blackies with my old .30-06 and swore by 165gr Boat Tail factory Federal loads (red box). But if 180's are the most accurate out of your rifle, any decent soft point load will more than suffice. Now grizzly bears are a different story...KF
 
You would have a hard time choosing the wrong bullet over 165 grains but I agree quality bullets are worth it and if I had a choice I would load 220 grain bullets.
Stop at "reliable gun and tackle" they are pretty good and should fix you up.
Or try "Europopean arms" they probebley have premium bullet for you!

Gosh I miss living in a town with more then one guns store!

I keep forgeting about them. I never have any idea what they sell since they have nothing on display :confused:.

but I only work 3 blocks away so I'll go see :D
 
You hjave to know what you are after at European Arms.

Anyway, for the 30-06, any 165gr and up bullet will do.

I always shoot some sort of premiums when hunting, since I think they have an extra margin for error.

If you can find some stuff with 180gr Accbonds, I bet it shoots well and kills well!;)
 
I would have to agree with Gatehouse, use premium ammunition for hunting, the extra dollars spent are well worth it. Forget Wally world and go out and buy some good ammo from the local gun store.

When I was still using my 30-06 on a regular basis I had really good luck with Federals 180g premium trophy bonded bear claw, killed everything I used it on. I found it to be a great factory load. But in the end, reloading will give you the most options of this great calibre.

mark me down for another reccomendation for 180 gr. Accubonds

Nosler Partitions would also be a good choice

Winchester Supreme with the CT FAILSAFE 180 grn in my Weatherby 300WSM dropped 500lbs + griz.

Have since switched to Barnes Tripple Shock X, they are absolutley devastating!! Federal should have factory loads with that round for your rifle.

Also look at the following,
- Nosler patition, (an old one but a good one!!)
- Swift A-frame (Use in larger caliber .375H&H MAG, makes things dead FAST).

I've shot bears with both bulk pack bullets and premium bullets, they all died. Mind you these bears were not threatening to push anyone out of the record books. If your just trolling for a small sausage bear then any bullet in a 30-06 150 gr and up will do fine. If your specifically after a book buster then I'd definitly step up and shoot a good bullet like a partition or Accubond.

All the bears I have shot were with the .270 shooting 140 to 150 gr bullets. That was before I bought big medicine

Screw Walmart - get your ammo from a good gunshop if you don't reload. Better selection and the folks that work at those shops are intrinsically more knowledgeable. So, you might pay a few extra bucks (bus fare); So what? ;)
 
Moose, deer & beer ... good results on all with Remington 180 gr.
Core-Lokts ... the round nose variety ... R30064 - not pointed soft points.

Like the premium Accu-Tip, Nosler & Swift bullet loads too !
 
If you're buying factory fodder, try a selection out.
I used to find the best accuracy I got was with Federals in my rifles.
With some other brands, the target, at 100yds looked like a shotgun pattern ie. there really wasn't one.
In the same token, a friend used some of what my rifle didn't like and obtained good results.
As to bullet loads, for most bears I ever see, 180gr in practicaly anything will do the job nicely.
If was Grizzly I was trying to socialize with, I'm not sure what I would use, but I'd sure ask here.
 
I think that you need to tell us the distances you'll be shooting. A 50 yard shot requires different bullett stratagy than say a 250 yard shot. But I think we all can agree in principle that the accubond is totally deadly at normal ranges! Good luck! Where ya hunting???
