factory 30-06 rounds for bear

Whatever you chose, put that bullet right into his shoulder.... then put another one there......maybe another. Taxidermists get paid to sew holes, make 'em work.

Corelokt have always served me well on bear btw.

Well, I have not shot bears with my 30.06, but have seen the results of a Federal Power shok 180gr bullet, and that black bear died quick. I used 180gr Win Silvertips for moose last fall and it did the job well. Broadside shot under 100m and bottom of heart gone, two inch hole on the other side. However this year, I think the Winchester Prem. Failsafe 180gr will be my preferred load. Less likely to deflect or fragment off a large bone like shoulders, etc. Federal does load a 220gr bullet in their Power Shok line. I think it is a Speer Hot Core bullet, the one that is supposed to replace the Grand Slam. It is a bonded bullet so it should be tough. I have not used it on game though.

One point to consider. If you start spending money on factory premium bullets, remember you can get started reloading for 30.06 for about $500. All you need to do is shoot approx 200 rounds in a year with some premium ammunition and you have paid for your reloading gear. I made that mistake!

Last spring I took a small blackie (5'7") using Federal Power shock 180gr factory ammo. One through the rib cage, it died quickly but I found jacket fragments in the animal... Mind you this was at .300WM velocities. This year I will be using 180 Partitions at about 2950fps.
