What is the conventional wisdom on a heavy (180 g?) .308 factory round for Moose and Bear? Any particular favorite, or one style that is known to have better, most consistent penetration, expansion, etc than others?

remington express core-lokt's pointed soft points in 180gr.

19.99 per box. It goes bang everytime. Killed many a deer with them. Needless to say, it's my favorite. :D

if I was stuffin a 308 with factory ammo for hunting blackies and moose, I'd first be looking at using the Federal Premium load with the 165 gr. Barnes Triple Shock X.

secondary choices would be Federal Premium 180 gr. Nosler Partition, or Federal 150 gr. TSX ammo

I like the SuperX Silvertips, not the Supreme ones. They hit hard and go deep on moose. In a premium load I'd go with the Failsafe or the Triple-shock

I wasn't sure if 165g is enough for moose, although that should be fine for black bear..... Sounds like lots of you guys use 165 or 168 gr with success on bullwinkle though.

when a bullet retains 99% of its original weight, classic "hunting" weight for a bullet normally used for moose gets tossed out the window.

I'd shoot a moose with a 130 gr X bullet and not feel undergunned

When are you gonna man up and start handloading?

I don't really want to get into it untill I get my workshop/garage built up North.
Maybe next year. There's a few guys up there that do a lot of it, and can show me the ropes on load development etc, so I'm looking forward to it, but just not quite yet.

Federal High Energy..... Nosler Partition 180 gr. .... = moose eater

150 SST from Hornady (could go for the light magnim ones) for the light weight deer.... devastating.
