Factory ammo hard to chamber

That ammo just shoots too good not to use it. I went to the range last night for one last cold bore shot at 100 yards. Stiff to close, but it's the best ammo I have shot out of this rifle.

My friend has the same sako a7 in 300wsm.

We were talking about rebarreling and guages, i tossed a go-gauge in his gun, the bolt wouldn't close at all on it.

It also wouldnt close on my 300wsm brass fired from a tikka, but it would chamber the factory stuff we tried.

I definitely told him to try his ammo before heading out.
Good advice to avoid disappointment in the field. Is he happy with his rifle otherwise? Mine has been a really good out of the box, take and hunt rifle. The cheap plastic stock gives me leeway to lean it up against anything out in the field, and the stainless still looks near spotless.

Its been a good rifle for him.

I just tried the go gauge again to see, the bolt starts to close but wont go more then half way down.
The fired brass from my tikka wont even let the bolt start to close.

I did a bit of research on it as it was really weird to me, seems like a common thing for the a7.

And hey now you and i know its not just your rifle or his lol.

Probably neither here nor there in this instance - however, when Remington started to make Model 30 rifles from left over parts from Model of 1917 rifles from WWI - the head of the Remington shop had to issue a letter to American "gunsmiths" who were claiming that the Model 30 was made with excess "headspace". Those actions were designed at Enfield Armoury in Great Britain - they had a slight bevel to the bolt locking lugs and the receiver seats - hence, as per that letter, the ONLY place to get correct headspace check was when the bolt was fully closed - not like a Mauser that had more or less "flat" locking lugs and recesses - could check "headspace" on a Mauser by partially closing the bolt, but not on an Enfield action.

I discovered that not all brass is made equal - I am in the process of chambering a 0.416" barrel, through a P14 action. Eventually the thing will take 416 Rem Mag cartridges. Out of 50 or so new Hornady brass, I can get about 5 or 6 cases that allow the bolt to start to close. The Clymer Headspace GO gauge does not allow the bolt handle to move downward at all. I've put the project away - too close to being done - usually at this point, I get "rammy" and screw something up.
