Factory ammo speed : the reality

Mr Bartell....just curious...are these measuring instruments for FPS yours or not? and would you know how often they are independently calibrated?

Raises a good question about most of our reloading gear. I doubt that anyone has "calibrated" their chrony. It would be interesting to know if a magnetospeed or labradar require calibration.

Fwiw- nosler 6.5cm 140 match bthp factory spec 2550fps - from a 26" christensen barrel 2677fps. somewhere around 50 rounds tracked with a Labradar. When LR plinking I shoot most of my rounds in front of the Labradar.

in the types of industry i work in, it is an essential part of any QAQC starting point as to put forward a product to a client which requires a certain spec plus there is a safety aspect when dealing in pressures/instruments/electrical/electronics
measuring those pressures. I just thought that this would apply to ballistics and how they are measured as well. In some of the fore-mentioned chart there sure is some variances. AND with the spreads are the claimed versus real world trying to just make a sale or are the makers just full of crap? or what are makers not telling the buyer

Most of the velocities posted were from my Labradar. Some were from a Shooting Chrony I owned prior.

Thanks Mr..... why are factory made round claims so different then real world tests especially in some calibers? Is it that they produce a top quality product with the best possible material for just one test "look at what our
ammo can do" and all the mass production is sub par? just wondering

Another one-

Federal 50 BMG is listed as 2910 FPS
I clocked it at 2786 FPS

They didn't list the barrel length tested, but my 50 BLG has a 32" barrel

I never clocked it when the rifle was new, so it's possible there has been some erosion.resulting in reduced velocities.

More likely to do with different throat lengths, barrel lengths, bore diameters, chamber sizes between rifles.

Adam just to give you an idea of the same loads from different, a friend had a 30-06 model fit with a 22" barrel and an A bolt with a boss so the actual barrel length was 20". He shot the same loads in both rifles and the browning recorded approx 100 fps more than the longer barrel with both 165 and 190 gr bullets.

ok. thank you!

aside from the 16.1 & 18.7" Ruger Scout 223/308 info, most barrel lengths are "normal" for the cartridges tested.

update :

300 Win Mag, Federal Fusion 180gr ~ 2960 fps claimed
24" Savage 116 ~ 2950 fps
26" Winchester m70 ~ 2916 fps

300 Win Mag, Nosler TG 180gr Accubond ~ 2950 fps claimed
26" Ruger ~ 2820 fps
26" Winchester m70 ~ 2767 fps

Hmm !

338 Federal, Federal Fusion 200gr ~ 2700 fps claimed
22" Ruger m77 ~ 2720 fps
22.4" Sako 85 ~ 2670 fps
22.4" Tikka T3 ~ 2586 fps

I Just Lab Radared the Federal Fusion 200 gr out of my Tikka T3 338 Fed at a average of 2725 fps ! RJ

Only chump change for speed try 4,665 ft/s (1,422 m/s) using a 29 grain bullet and 42 grains of 3031 powder 220 Swift.
