So if it points into the wind, but carries down wind, doesn't that mean the bullet is going sideways to some degree wrt to the target? That must really compound the drag.
It weathervanes just enough so that the airflow (from the bullet's perspective) is straight head on, so the drag force is the same as for a straight shot in still air. Yes, the bullet is moving sideways wrt the target, but it is the airflow that controls the drag, not the direction it moves wrt the ground or target.
