(I posted this as an add-on to another thread, but I wanted to start this on a thread all its own)

Largely on the basis of the very interesting "Why I don't compete" thread, I have talked with one of the pooh bahs at our club. the idea of a factory class shoot seems to be very well received.

A couple of ideas were tossed around including having a straight 300M ISSF/F-class but using factory guns, or a mixed even including snap, balloons, and a standard 300M ISSF so that shooters can sample a bit of everything.

I'd be interested to know what sorts of events would/should be incorporated into an event like that. Anybody with experience in these matters, I'd love to hear.

We may have to tell Mystic Player to stay away... we need SOME chance of letting the newbies win...

Lastly, how many BC shooters here would attend an event like that up in the 'loops?

Ian, right now I don't have a factory rifle to compete with anyways. But that is easily solved :).

What I fear is that a factory class can rapidly get as expensive, maybe more expensive then the reg. Open class.

With rifles with like the TRG, and new Savage/Rem target rifles, factory rifles will meet and exceed the cost of a custom build up. I know that is not the intention but that is human nature. All of a sudden it becomes another money race as shooters evolve from hunting rifles to factory competition rigs.

For 300m, one event could be a one cal event (all 223's) or one type of rifle/brand event. Or separating sporter from heavy factory barreled rifles. If cost is the main deterent, why not put a claimer or cap on equipment costs?

How about a handicap system based on previous relays? All shoot the first relay the same. The top score gives the lower scores some percentage of points to help equalize the performance. Winners are determined for gross (actual score shot) and net scores (after handicap is added).

Performance for factory rifles range from Porsches to LADA's with the same range of prices. It is a superb first start but rules have to be reviewed carefully to keep the event within its intended purpose.

I would be very interested in attending a shoot in Kamloops.

Your points are excellent Jerry, I guess I was thinking of proposing perhaps having sub-classes (ie: military bolts, tactical class ie: TRG's, TikTacs LTR's and Savage's, and a hunter class. )
Theoretically, this would level the playing field somewhat.

A long way to go to make this happen still, but lots to start thinking about.

If you have too many classes, you might not get enough in each class to make it worthwhile. Like now, all F class shoot together only distinguished by firing position. There is little point in shooting F(F).

I think the easiest way is to separate heavy from sporter barrel. Factory models mass produced (no custom shop or low volume specialty rifles like the 40X???) with orig triggers, stocks and barrels with no changes to improve or modify chamber.

No swapping of parts within product line. example factory stock from one rifle put onto barreled action from another. Must be the way it was offered and cataloged (shooter to provide proof).

Can be bedded/free floated, recrowned, new recoil pad/length of pull adjusted, and triggers tuned (2lbs min trigger pull) but that would be it. Accessories would be any scope base and rings, bolt handles, mag follower and scope. No comb or stock aftermarket add ons. Any front and rear rest.

If you want all factory rifles to shoot together, I would offer a handicap of some kind. Maybe throw in a weight or scope mag limit. That would break up the field enough.

How's that?

I guess anyone can make a game expensive if they want, but from what I have seen Savage, Tikka and Remington seem to be the rifles of choice in Factory Class. I really don't see how a TRG or similar can have any advantage when it is limited to the factory 26" barrel.

Funny how all the leading rifles I see scores posted for are all around one third the cost of the TRG. Maybe the difference is that those are the shooters who had money left over to go practice.

My advice to you, as someone who has done it, Keep it real simple.
factory rifle. under 10 power scope. No "New" rifles bought to compete in the "Factory " class. Limited distance. One class.
