The question is Accuracy; which is better to ensure best possible results? The use of the Lee Factory Crimp Die alone, Neck Turning alone and the Die in congruence with turning operations. If anyone has experience in this field your findings would be helpful. I plan to run my own test as well.
I will be using a factory stock Remington 700 Sendero, .300 Win Mag as my test platform, with previous loads at 165 and 180 gr bullets it has shown to be 1/2 MOA capable, 1/3 on one of my good days. I will be using Winchester brass, WLRM primers, and 190 gr SMK's. I haven't decided on powder yet, I usually use reloader 22, but have had good success with IMR 4831 and 4350 as well in the past. I first will have to work up an initial accurate load as I have not loaded for the 190 before. Once I establish a satisfactory result with non crimped, non turned cases I will further break the test down to Crimped, Turned and Crimp+Turn. I plan to do all my shooting @ 200 yards, with a tie breaker at 500 if required
I crimp all of my hunting loads and have found it to give me more even upper and lower velocities with the lighter 165 bullets and even lowering the variation on my 180 gr loads to a satisfactory degree. I believe the crimp allows for a more even ignition and initial powder burn. I weigh all my loads and don't fill with anything that varies over .1 grains. That being said I have been told that the crimp also evens out velocities with powder variations up to .5 grains.
Hope to get back with results and pics as soon as this Alberta wind goes away.
Any info on personal 190 gr loads in a 300 WM would be helpful, also any other powders I should be trying. I have heard that Vihtavuori powders are giving people good results.
