"Factory Refurbished" Sig P220s" are they safe?

Hi everyone. There are alot of "Factory Refurbushed" Sig. P220s on the market in Vancouver and I am wondering how safe they are. They are going for pretty cheap.

I am wondering if they are safe to buy. I don't want a .45 round blowing half my face off because i want to save a few bucks.

Has anyone bought a factory refurbished sig in .45 and can tell me what thier experience with the gun was?

The idea of factory refurbished is that the factory is safer then anywhere else you could get a refurb. If a factory refurb would blow up, chances are new off the factory floor would as well.
 
No, it will not blow up in your face. Having said that, I would not recommend going with a Sig Refurb. There has been a lot of discussion about this on sigforum lately, and the general consensus is that CPOs are no longer a good value. Sig recently started the practice of using spray paint (which flakes of the first time you clean the gun) to hide worn put parts. So you can buy a gun that looks brand new only to find out that it has a heavily worn frame underneath the camouflage. In my mind, this is borderline consumer fraud.

Thanks guys (and Gals?). I am desperate for a .45, and dont have the dough for a decent 1911 so I thought the sig 220 would be my best bet.

I like the gun too, i like the look, the feel and the action. Thanks for the advice, i'm gonna go for it.
 
I have a refurb P226. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

There was a spike of Sigforum talk about crummy paint jobs on some refurbs, or CPO's as they are officially called. But mine is fine. It's tight, accurate, trouble free. In fact, I might buy a P220 refurb in the new year.

I guess they found the work-ethic-challenged employee who was messing up the refinishing and took care of the problem. I hope.

I found a refurbished 226 CPO at a local dealer here a couple of weeks ago. It had the crappy finish and you could scrape it off with your fingernail. I was really disapointed to find one here. I have bought CPO's in the past and have been very pleased with them but I think I will give them a pass until Sig gets this sorted out.
They are easy to spot if you know what to look for. Check the frame rails and the bottom of the mag well. The one I saw had the finish already piling up on the frame rails after the slide was racked a few times and the finish scraped off the mag well very easily.
Any with the natural stainless finish should be fine though and I think a lot of the 220 CPO's come that way. I have a stainless 220 and I love it.
 
I was looking at the Sig CPO's as well, but at between $800 and $900, at Shooters choice in Kitchener, I can't see the point, for another $100 or so I could buy a new one. What are they generally going for?

Have you looked at the STI Spartan? $720 is pretty good for what you're getting.
 
Looks good, and the price is right for sure. I innitially wanted to pick up a S&W PD in stainless, but it's twice the price of the spartan and my local dealer is sold out.

Whats the deal with importing pistols from the states? Do i need ANOTHER liscence, or apply for one, or can they just ship it?

I remember reading somewhere that there is something in canadian legislation that prohibits the import of weapons into Canada from the United States.

It's a nice gun though for sure. Too bad its not in stainless.
 
If you can't find the right deal in a 1911 or a sig 220, suggest you check out a Ruger KP345DPR.

I think it was guns and ammo's handgun of the year when it came out.

Had one for a while, but decided to stick with frame mounted safeties like my 1911, browning high power, and cz. The slide mounted switches are like the beretta. I decided not to have two systems, with opposite and different lever operating motions. that's just me.

the ruger is about $550 retail, comes with 2 8-round mags, polymer frame with stainless slide, as compact as legally get in dimensions, decent sights, has a rail, compact grip, and most important to me, a double action trigger / single action trigger which i found on par with a sig.

very well made and nothing i could see needs improving on

the decocker model would be the most efficient, i think, without the safety.

Thanks for the advice, i think i know about the ruger you are talking about. It was the guns and ammo 'gun of the year' in 2004 i belive.

Yes the ruger is a cheap and reliable .45, but i just think it is ugly as hell! Ugh, it looks like its made out of welded together airplane parts.

I just purchased a stainless 220 with houge grips and night sights for $1250+tax. from a board dealer sponser.
 
yes it is my first handgun. I don't really like the Norinco handguns, they have a lousey finish and generally look bad. They have some nicer ones that have been tuned up a little bit, but those ones are approaching the price of the sigs i like, and i would have to wait for them to come in the mail....

So Oui, C'est mon premier pistol.

is buying a sig .45 a problem if it my first pistol? What is the significance of my purchase being my first handgun. Should i be looking for something in a smaller caliber or different model/format?

Thanks for the input TG, I am a little nervous/confused about buying my first handgun and could use some advice on what to pick up.
