Factory Savage wins big shoot!

As with many things Canadian, availability is lacking. If they are up here, I doubt they will cost $400.

With my success using Stevens actions and Rifle Basix 2 triggers, my costs are about $400 and I feel the RB trigger allows me more options in tuning.

I see no value in the small port, single shot action vs my action with a single shot follower glued in. In fact, my action gives me more options to use larger and longer cases.

And I can always convert them back to mag fed rifles if I feel like it.

Fair enough I suppose. I guess I was thinking that a single shot action might be more rigid and stable. I'm not dissatisfied with my action either, at least for what we are doing. Thanks Jerry. fred

The receiver is undoubtedly more rigid but I don't know that it any more precise. If the figures posted by one 'smith on the BR site are any indication, they are not. Not having measured one myself, I can't say for sure.
I have to say, perhaps because I am un-enlightened, I would opt for an XR100 action over the Savage if the cost is remotely similar. Regards, Bill.

All this Benchrest and F Class stuff aside, it would great to see just some "fun" contests for guys just starting out (like myself) to come and shoot at. Some guys take it upon themselves to organize egg shoots, sniper shoots etc... which is great and I think this would be an easy way for people to get out, meet and get more into the general sport. If the organized clubs and groups could put these on a couple times through the summer, that might get a base from which you could get new guys into the more serious competitions.

I can't think of another hobby or sport that has the potential for being more solitary than shooting (probably why CGN does so well). I've gone to the public Homestead range a fair bit this spring and either I'm there by myself shooting away or i have minimal discussions with anyone else that might be there. Most are hunters that come once a year or a father showing his son how to shoot the 12ga or some young guys just getting their rocks off shooting their new guns... hence not a lot around to discuss what your doing or what you want to do or trade tips etc...

There were some guys that I had met before there and seen them again a couple weeks ago. They had put up a small "gong" on a rope at 200 and a bunch of us were taking shots at it. It was quite fun being able to hit it and send it twirling around in front of everyone. It made for a little bit of extra fun and gave a guy a reason to chat with some of the other guys there. If more fun stuff like that was going on, it could bring potential new guys out of the shadows and increae the numbers that might want to get into more serious stuff.

Sort of like rec nights for volleyball that may lead people into a city league etc... Just a thought...

caljay30, I love what you are suggesting and you have the perfect venue right here to do what you want. Put a post asking those in your area to PM you so you know who is out there.

Then just pick a Weekend and PM these shooters to show up.

Put up some balloons, gongs, paper targets, whatever and just have some fun.

My LR shoot is done on the same basis and it has worked so very well. Don't wait for someone to ask you, unlikely to happen. But a friendly invitation will usually get positive response.

Now you have someone to chat with. To shoot with. Then just ask another shooter to do the same some other weekend and you can all do it again.

As for shooting with others that share a common interest, that is a huge reason why I compete. At each match, you have a bunch of shooters who do what you enjoy and have similar interest.

There is lots of time to BS and then go burn some powder. There are many shooters are there to have a good time and improve a personal best.

Others are more serious and shoot for a good result.

But everyone has a chance to have some fun with like minded shooters.

Go see a Homestead F class match. The guys/gals I have met were super nice and love to BS as much as they love to drill out the X ring. Better yet, grab a rifle and go have some fun.

It is an absolute hoot.....
