isn't the fail safe meant for BIG GAME? things like; elk, moose, grizzly, some of the big antelope in africa, etc.

i don't see how not opening up on a 120-250 lb animal is a failure, when the bullet is intended for much heavier game.

Who uses them, and what do you think about them? good bullet??

i have had nothing but bad performance with them on game, I have seen maybe a half dozen critters shot with them.

Nope, never used them except on paper. That said, over the years I sold a few boxes, and always liked to follow up with folks on how thier kit performed for them. The FSs were generally regarded as OK, but not stellar. Better than the cheap crap out there, but only rated as OK. That said, they killed Moose, Black Bear and Bambi's.

Generally the complaint was not ENOUGH damage....hunh, go figure. The folks who wanted thier moose to look like it had been hit by artillery were usually disappointed. The deer guys felt that they were only ok, or in other words, not worth the extra money.

As it was, in the end, sales dropped off, where as Fed Premium, Hornady, Speer etc, all stayed relative or climbed.

Since this thread started I heard that Winchester is dropping the Failsafe bullet... they made this anouncement at a writers conference in the US. A writer I know told me that they admitted it was a poor bullet design and they were going to replace it with something new :?

Hey Riley I was refering to the black talon fail safe, winchesters first fail safe bullet and didnt relise they had a new one out (unless its the same black molly coated peice of junk? havent seen them )

In my moose hunting group, 4 of us use .300 WM, all shoot Fail-Safes. In the last 10 years we have taken 8 moose and 2 black bears. Never lost an animal, and the farthest any of them have run after being hit with the Fail-Safe is about 75 yards.
In this area Fail-Safes are hard to find, so I tried some Winchester Accubonds just for back-up. To my dismay they shot 3 inches lower at 100 yards then the Fail-Safes in the two rifles we tested them in.

Never used them. The old man shot a few out of my 300 back when it was his, but we've always used Partitions for hunting handloads. Damn near exclusively.
