Had my first Failure to fire today with my M-14...

The firing pin impacted the primer, but not very deeply. I think the problem was when I cleaned the rifle and took the firing pin apart last time, I actually oiled in there. I think it got a little sticky because I hadn't used it in a while...

The solution... Gotta get out more! Dust won't have a chance to build up then!

What do you think?

WOW!
That sounds no good. I am not that knowledgeable about the m14 and there variants's but I do know that all the bolt's are supposed to have free floating firing pin and never should have any oil or other debris in there.

Oh well that changes everything then. It sounds like a trigger assembely problem. Maybe you should check the hammer for uneven wear then if the problem happens again.

Satain is correct, your M14s firing pin MUST be free floating and under NO circumstances should be oiled or greased. Same goes for the gas assembly.
doing so is inviting disaster and personal injury as far as the bolt is concerned.

bad primers happen to the best of us ;)
i remember years ago i had a case of surplus sks ammo that 1 in 5 appeared to be a dud. just for chitsngigglez one day i loaded them up and tried em again..... most fired the second time around.
