I have a rem 700 bdl in .222 that doesn't always extract the shell on the first try. Usually comes out on the second try ,always by the third. Should I be looking at getting a new extractor ?? or something else??

Check the extractor carefully for any crud buildup. Can it move freely? Sometimes they can be adjusted. Is your extractor the earlier rivetted style, or the later snap in pattern?

It's failing to extract the shell from yhe chamber. Don't know what type I have . It's on an older model. Sorry I'm not much of a gun tech.
Thanks

I'd think about it. Every BDL that I've ever seen eventually has extractor problems.
You obviously have seen only a few 700 BDLs then, and the poorer ones at that, since I have owned over 100 of them with nary an extractor problem. Some of these rifles are on their 3rd barrel. Extractor problems do happen, but are not nearly as common as your statement would suggest. That 222 obviously needs some attention, though. I would take it to a competent 'smith and have him assess the issue. Regards, Eagleye.
