An older gentleman (and I do mean gentleman) who just happens to be a very good friend just purchased a brand new in the box norinco M14s . He paid $449.00 + tax for the rifle with one 5rd mag, the sling, cleaning kit & manual. The retailer soaked him an additional $50.00 for a 5/20 rd mag. The one that I bought from Perkins in Pembroke a couple weeks ago included two of the five rounders & the 5/20 along with the rest of what you would have expected. Personaly , I feel that he was taken advantage of. I hesitate to name names here but i will say that the shop is in the Orillia area. I suppose that it does really come down to the old BUYER BEWARE crapola but come on. Why screw around with the buyers for two mags and a couple of extra bucks ? Maybe I'm all wrong here but this sort of thing ticks me off and leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth along with the determination not to shop there anytime soon! Mike

I see what you are saying mike, but in the same sence "a gun is worth as much as the buyer pays for it" people have different opinions and if he didn't think it was a good or fair deal he shouldn't of bought it. just like you said buyer beware.
The other thing to take into account here is that the gun store is most likely not the one who imported it, which means they purchased it from a midleman first.
For example, Marstar imported them. They sell them for $399.00. They now need to be shipped to Orillia, and profit added. To ship a rifle we all know can be quite costly ($25-ish) and then to add on a decent profit to make it worth while? $449.00 isn't unreasonable by any means, nor is the additional magazine price.

I know a gun store that if they had any M6 scouts they would ask a $1000 for them but I also know another one that just sold a brand new one (old invetory) for $350. people can and will ask what they want. and it is worth it to the right buyer. just look at the EE

Obviously I am all wrong and defer to the opinion of the majority here. It has also been pointed out to yours truly that an appology is due to the store in question and is herewith offered.However, I do not and never will appologise for being concerned about the wellfare of a friend.
I'm backing ###XX on this one. The retailer has to add a cut in order to remain in business. I've got to side with the business(es) since they are in a tough position, tough market, tough legislation, all in order to support our shooting tendencies.
It's the law of supply and demand and Caveat Emptor over and over again. Good, bad or indifferent, consumers have to be on their toes to keep prices competitive.
I ain't making any apologies for any retailers, but we are in a symbiotic relationship. Luckily we are in a democracy where information (buying & selling) is available for discussion (on CGNutz). All of us have choices we can make.

Okay. I surrender allready!!! The store needs to make a buck to stay in business and yes one merely needs to shop around for the best deal if that does matter to you. Having said that, some of you guys have been to the sandbox and know what it is like to have someone watching your back and my friend is just that type of friend if you know what I mean.

Many of us consider the shop near Orillia friends too, so look out for them as well. So when you imply wrong doing on their part people get upset. I'd be happy paying that amount. Some retailers were and may be still are selling them upwards of 600$

The store in Orilla purchases the M14 from Norinco Factory "X" which sells the rifles with ONE magazine only.
Marstar purchases the M14 from Norinco Factory "Y" which sells the rifles with THREE magazines.
The Orilla guys DO NOT "REMOVE" 2 mags from the box as they were never in the box to begin with.
Although both factories operate under the "Norinco" banner, they are indeed two separate factories located in different parts of China.
I have been told that the "quality" from Factory "X" is much higher than the quality from Factory "Y". (Fewer defective units)
I have purchased often from BOTH the guys in Orilla and Marstar. I am buying a M14 from Marstar simply due to Marstars 1 year, no bull#### garantee plus the fact Marstar is $50 cheaper and has two more mags. To me the 1 year garantee is very important. I have had problems with a Norc product in the past, and Marstar fixes it up no questions asked!
There is a shipment of M14's en route to Marstar (on boat in Hong Kong at present). Once they are sold, Factory "Y" (Marstars supplier) will NO LONGER produce the M-14 rifles. This is not to say that Factory "X" will also do same. Factory "X" may continue making this model for the next 10 years, then again, maybe not.
All this to say the Orilla guys are NOT swiping 2 mags out of the box and then reselling them to you for an extra $50.
If Marstar didn't have a shipment "en route", I would purchase one from Orilla without hesitation.

I bought exactly same kind of gun (not M14, but exactly identical guns) for $300 and $700 depending on how badly I needed that particular unit. So it's fair if the person paid - it's market economy and everyone is free to do their own research.
