I have used a fake can on my H&K Mark23 (handgun) and my USC45 (threaded for same pitch).
Shooting with the fake can on doesn't change the sound at all standing from the side, but it does move it a bit further away from you when you're shooting it. Even with the MFI can (being a steel tube with a thin aluminum shroud over) at something like 5 ounces, it adds a noticeable difference in handling. Not heavy, but it changes how the gun feels, so you may or may not like how it makes the gun feel.
For an AR15, since you'll be shooting at a range or indoor range, flash isn't such a big deal with a 14.5" or 16" barrel; the can that goes over the barrel and doesn't add any length would be what I'd get. They are definitely great for photo's and stuff like that! (for nothing else, if you decide you don't like it and take it off)
