Fake suppressors / Barrel shrouds

A fake suppressors isn't the same thing as a barrel shroud. Being in Quebec a fake suppressor would likely get you a lot of unwanted attention too. However, a hunk of ABS pipe or the like will suffice as fake suppressor.
 
I guess I made a couple, just carbon fiber tube and some aluminum, though they weren't to be fake supressors so much as basically a barrel shroud, though it should be simple enough to just make them shorter, order some carbon fiber tube off the web and get someone with a lathe to build aluminum "pucks" to fit the ends to your barrel diameter:

just showing off my scabrication, but hopefully it gives you some ideas, if you want a link to the place I ordered the carbon fiber from send me a PM, there is a couple more pics and info in a thread in the rimfire section, maybe you know someone with a lathe.

esthetics mostly, though I believe it actually stiffens the barrel some as well, I epoxied only the rear end of it on the lakefield (MK III) at first and checked to see how stiff the carbon tube was simply by squeezing the barrel towards the tube between my fingers. It was actually fairly stiff compared to the barrel, real world results are anyone's guess, and it does compromise the barrels ability to cool, which isn't hugely significant in the case of the lakefield bolt action .22

The pencil barrel on the .17 WSM B mag (pictures above) is quite thin from the factory, again mostly cosmetic value to match the stock and big LRS scope, but if anything it should stiffen the barrel, and I expect it to have some positive results on accuracy, though maybe more heat deflection, I'll see when i get it to shoot it again next.

In terms of having some sort of huge performance advantage, meh... Mostly just a fun project to do something different.
 
The main reason I'm getting a barrel shroud (that happens to be non-ventilated and therefore looks a lot like a suppressor) for my Cx4 is almost purely aesthetics.

I can see a very minor benefit to the shroud in moving the balance point of the firearm a little forward, and in offering a small measure of protection for the muzzle (for example making it a little harder to plug the muzzle with dirt because there's more area to trust into soft ground). I can't decide whether a non-ventilated shroud would provide any thermal benefit or handicap for the barrel, given that I'm not very likely to let it rip on rapid fire with 30-rounds mags in Canada anyways.

There may be one handicap to having a shroud (beside the slight added weight): you might not be able to use a recoil compensator/flash hider at the same time if your firearm could benefit from one.
