Falcon Menace for .17 HMR~too much scope?

Hey guys, looking to make my next .17 my last (maybe..:) ) and am committed to putting some good glass on this rifle. I will confess that I've never spent more than $200 on a rifle scope but then again, I've mainly shot rimfires. I'm considering a Falcon Menace and will confess that aesthetics are playing a small role in my decision-making process. I've read plenty of positive things about the scopes too of course, vanity only takes you so far. :rolleyes:

So, yes or no....good scope for a .17 HMR, too much? For those who throw a "go for it" at me, please don't hesitate to tell me where I might find the best price on one. Paper-punching and future ground hog blasting is the application.

If you plan on using it for groundhog, it would probably be a good idea to invest in a scope. The whole Falcon lineup is solid at a reasonable price...plus Frontier has free shipping on all Falcon scopes right now ;)
 
Too much scope? Too much gun? etc. Put what YOU want. I have a VX-3 3.5-10x40 on a 22LR semi. Who cares? No one. It was a spare in the gun room and the 22 needed a scope. Done.
 
I would recommend you have a look at the mueller line of scope too if you want high mag at a low price. They are a good buy for the money.

I've owned one on my 10/22 for years now and it works well. Also had a falcon 8.5-25x56 (that I just recently sold) to compare it too, for the price on a low recoiling rifle, you can go wrong with Mueller.
 
I've got Falcon Menace scopes on both my M700 SPS rifles (.223 and .22-250). :D I love to watch the drama (earthpigs) unfold in my scope. Bright and brilliant (my old eyes need this) for the price point!

I bought each of them at Frontier (free shipping) and Allen Gun Works (cheap mailing)... and he's back from the 'Stan! :ar15:

Buy what works for your budget and then your LCF (look cool factor). It's all good!

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. I think I'd rather have "too much" scope than going cheap this time. I'm pretty confident the next rifle (after the .17 HMR) will be a .223. If the Falcon proves to be more than required, I know it'll be fine for whatever I move it up to.

I've got a 4-14 falcon on my savage .17 btv.
It's a nice fit for the rifle, good glass, side adjustable parallax, good repeatable turrets, and the reticle is great for "kentucky windage" when you don't have time to spin the turrets.
Out past 100 yards on a windy day you'll be glad you've got a ranged reticle.
 
In the summer I have been putting my 4.5-14 X 44mm Leupold VXIII on the .17
Gophers out to 150 yards. It just makes it too easy.
 
I use a number of the Falcon scopes on .22LR, and a couple for 223. It's not too much. One of the reasons I use it for .22LR is the fact that it has parallax adjustment down to rimfire ranges. A lot of other scopes don't. I find them very well suited for rimfire rifles.

The glass is 94% light transmission (You'd have to go to an Elite 4200 to beat that) and the feature set is excellent. A few shortcomings but overall good glass, great features especially for the price point. Also check out the ML16 reticle. It mimics the NP-R reticle on my Nightforce scopes. My favourite reticle.

A note on the Falcon scope reviews. The first Falcon scopes were 92% light transmission. A lot of the online reviews were done when this was the case. They are now all 94%.

Allengunworks is a good place to get them. That's who I dealt with. Frontier also sells them.

Here's my latest example. This is the 4-14x 44mm FFP with ML16 reticle. I really like this scope for my multi purpose semi auto .22LR rifles. Note: Use low rings with this scope. These are medium and I'll be changing them in for the low.
