Came across a release that the Ontario Falconry Centre near Tottenham was fined $6000 in 2008 for licencing irregularities relating to possessing birds.
I suppose the best idea would be to have all the paper in order from the get go.

I am familiar with Tottenham, the center is a very unique situation. PM me for details as it is not appropriate to discuss on an open forum, but to sum it all up;

All native birds of prey are protected, to possess them you must be licensed. To have a native bird of prey in your possession is a crime and involves serious fines and potential jail time. You must be properly licensed before obtaining a bird. If you get caught with a bird without proper permits there is a very good chance you will denied the ability to get a proper license in the future. So yes it is quite important to put your ducks in a row before taking the dive.

I don't understand the legalities around having a Snowy Owl as a pet but I must say I find this whole thing to be very interesting

The legalities largely depend on what province you reside in. Don't look at it as a "pet", more like a benign dictatorship or voluntary slavery, the bird is first and foremost master and then hunting partner, in that order. You will be mighty disappointed with them as "pets". Birds of prey in captivity are very demanding, difficult, and ornery. By the time you figure your cost and licensing requirements you will quickly come to the conclusion that they are simply too much a pain in the neck to keep just for a pet.
