I note in this years regulations that Fallow Deer are no closed season, no bag limit, and no tag required.

Is this because they want to be rid of them or is hunting them so difficult (read access)?

It wasn't that long ago that Fallow Deer were limited entry.

Maybe the introduced Plains Bison at Pink Mountain will go the same way.

Yes - they (provincial government) are looking to reduce the feral population on the gulf islands. The problem is - most of the deer reside on private land (small parcels) and few locals will give you permission to hunt. But if you can find a place to hunt - go for it - I understand fallow deer are quite good eating.

I too noticed that as well.
I am pleasantly surprised that the government has gone this way.
The only concern i have is access ...but there is some time to do some leg work and seek out a potential land owner who will allow hunting on their property.

Fallow are the better eating that I have tasted, of Red Sambar and obviously Fallows....

beaut little deer too, much easier to manage than the big brown ones.

tonne of fun to hunt in the rut for croaking bucks! like a tonne of fun!

quite easy to hunt being graziers

The gov't wants them gone- they are slowly hopping islands and there is legitimate fear they will overwhelm the blacktails (given time and opportunity). That said, access is such a major challenge that anything they can do to help make a hunter's life easier is worth their while.
Side note: last time I hunted them there was no fallow deer species tag, you just needed the special islands hunting endorsement and the bag limit was 5. Aside from James Island a Sydney Island very very few were shot.
Good luck - they are awesome eating! :)
