FAMAE 540 FAQ: Why its cool, and you should own one

I have owned two different SG542 rifles in .308 cal at different times over the years. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but neither of my rifles was particularly accurate from the bench, with 3-4 MOA being the norm with quality 150 gr military surplus ammo (eg. South African Battle Pack). That said, they were comfortable-shooting, lightweight and handy rifles, so had qualities other than accuracy, which was acceptable for mililtary purposes (minute of man). The practical accuracy on steel targets out to 500m was pretty decent, so although neither of my SG 542s grouped particularly well they were decent practical rifles.

The SG 540 is an entirely different animal in 5.56mm, with 2 MOA being the average with military surplus 55 gr ball ammo. They do considerably better with match fodder! The SG 543 was much more a short-range bullet-hose with mediocre accuracy (and velocity) beyond 100m.

I'm wondering, if anyone knows a decent brass catcher that'd work with a FAMAE? Most of the options that are available do not accommodate that reciprocating charging handle and are designed to work with AR's.. any ideas?

No brass catcher that I am aware of will accommodate that reciprocating Charging Handle flying back and forth the full length of the Cocking Slot. Rifles with Right-Hand, fixed Charging Handles generally do not play well with brass catchers.

This AK brass catcher looks like it could work, but I have no idea if it fits a FAMAE..

Oh God that 540 with the wire folder is NUT

I liked mine quite a bit, many happy hundreds upon hundreds of rounds down range.

Not the best optics platform I found. Don't really care about that though. Enjoyable rifle in it's classic configuration. The newer design will probably be nice.

God I want to get my hands on some of that green furniture. Anyone know if there's a market in Chile for these things or if FAMAE can sell these things directly?
CSC has ignored my request.

Best option at this point would be to just paint your furniture. I cerakoted my black furniture to match the manurhin green color and I think it turned out quite well.

Famae really only does military orders, we just piggyback off said orders.

AFAIK they don't make the classic furniture at all anymore as no military is interested in the classic models. New models have a different stock and handguard mount system.

I liked my 540, but my Swiss PE90 was far superior for precision. I struggled finding ammo for a 542 for a while. It would shoot MOA with 120gr Spanish ammo, but I couldn't find much of it. Didn't like the same loads I made for my M14, so it had to go. Can't have too many different custom rounds, not enough time for that. Regardless, I miss all those guns... The swiss in particular was a beauty for deer and coyotes. One calibre to rule them all.

What size mag pouches fit the 5/30 sized magazines?
Magazines are finicky to remove... grab the mag & press the release lever, rock the magazines out half way and they get stuck and I have to hit the release again
