Famae SG 542 unboxing.

Inside the magazine... Just to correct the misinformation that is floating around. The magazine is blocked by that square piece of steel welded in the track part way down. The mags are full length military mags that are blocked to 5 rounds. Not purpose built """Canadian""" mags....

I have no experience with the SG542 but I do have it's little 5.56 brother, the SG540.

It's an awesome little gun and I think the FAMAE rifles are often under rated. I do have "nicer" rifles than the FAMAE but I can honestly say that my little 540 is the one that would pain me the most if I ever had to sell it.

I think you will be happy with your 542.

Good job taking a rifle out of a box and photographing it!

Enjoy your new boomstick. I’d have one for sure if mags weren’t $135 a piece.

Welding done before finishing. The production line was altered for Canadian specific requirements. You can define that any way you want but it costs more to produce

wasn't arguing that. I don't mind the price of the mags. I knew that going in. I just wanted to point out they were standard mags other then the fact that block is in them not completely canadian. for example my sig sauer p226 has fake bottom mags. the metal part is a shorter 10 round magazine with a 2 inch piece of plastic added to the bottom to extend the length to make them fit the gun. I was worried I was getting into another one of those rediculous things. either way it's not a price thing. I don't care about that. I just wanted the same mags as the military rifles. not some weird trashy thing made just for us.

Enjoy it and get used to the irons for a bit before you go for any optics choice.
As a battle rifle. do your part and at 300-400m it will take down a deer sized/man sized target with no problem all day long.

I'ld recommend that you come back here and ask about optics when ready before you spend cash.
As far as magazines go, don't panic over the price.
Given the cost of .308, it isn't like you or anyone else can afford to burn through that.
So even two or three magazines is good to go.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth over the SG542 magazine cost is silly IMHO, for the very reasons that others have pointed out. Proprietary magazines are not cheap, even though their construction may not vary dramatically from standard "dime a dozen" box magazines. Changes to production lines are expensive in terms of machine down-time and retooling costs. At the end of the day, the cost of SG542 mags is well-known in advance of a purchase and are simply the cost of doing business in Canada. No whining required.....

The fake bottom mags are just their standard civie mags.

Thanks for the post and looking forward to some range reports. Are you scoping it? I think that is my one concern on the is rifle is mounting a scope without it being to high. That is more of a concern for me than the price of the mags.
