Famae SG-542 vs Robinson Arms XCR-M (308) - Which One Would You Choose ?

I wanted to go Trijicon acog. 4 x32 but I would be curious about others optics choices

I had a burris ar 332 on my rfb, its a fix 3x , like a acog. Its now on my dd ar but its going to go for sale. The optic os good, but why have a fix 3x or 4x in your case, wen for cheaper you can have a high quality variable power in the 1-4 (5 or 6) or a 1.5-6 (or 8).

You have the magnification you like with the big advantage of a 1x or even a 1.5x.

Very valid points. I did think about a 1-4 or 1-6x. But I have never owned a acog type scope. I though it might be fun to throw on the SG542. Maybe not though...good thing we have plenty more time to think about it!

Maybe a nice Leupold MR/T 1.5-5x....:D

Just a small side note, if you don't mind a bottom magnification of 3 or 4 you can get a 3-9 / 3-12/ 4-12/ 4-16 type scope; even do it doesn't look "as cool" it is definitively more versatile.

Any variable power ether low or higher then a acog just have huge advantage. A low you will have a cqb capability, try to acquire a moving target at 5 to 15 yard with a 1x vs. a 4x big difference. Also at longer range 200-600 yards , a 9 to 16x is night and day compare to a 4x. You will have the guys saying they ring the gong every shot at 500 yard with iron site but it's not always about a gong show. Think about trying to identify a target at 200 yard and beyond( buck from a doe) also a target at distance is not always as evident as a gong or paper target.

I own and like both rifles quite a lot, but for the time being, despite a bit of extra weight, the XCR-M will win out over the SG542.

The 542 is a good rifle, obviously as the Swiss Arms line took many cues from it, but I have been having problems with the proprietary magazines for feeding, and have not been able to sort it out yet. Lack of accessory rails to add a proper bipod is a big downside for longer range shooting, as the factory folding bipod really lets it down in the stability dept.

The XCR is an awesome piece, with the one downside in my opinion being weight, but massive adaptability is a big selling point.

The M shoots incredibly well off a bipod with a Vortex Razor HD 1-6x scope for mid range rapid fire. (4-600 yard) With proper optics this rifle is suitable for 0-600 yards, or can be suited to either CQB or long range in particular, the rifle is accurate enough for the long stuff.

Feel free to ask any specific questions you guys may have, I am more than happy to answer, as the rifles are just a few feet from me right now.

Keep in mind with the 542 you don't have an intregal rail/flattop for mounting optics. So they'll sit quite high once you slide on the add-on top rail, then the mount and scope on top of that.

FAMAE is my pick, however I think they're severely overpriced. I don't know how they get away with pricing the rifles the same as Swiss quality firearms.

It's the non restricted black tax.
The accessory prices are pretty high as well, and for the price of the gun and the mags they should function perfectly without feeding issues.

I ended up putting a redfeild 3x9
on my sg 542 , I will end up cutting and modifying the mags to full 5 rounders for less weight
this is going to be shooting 165 sst hand loads at deep timber elk I think I'm still under 8 lbs

my vote is for the 542... i love mine.

Ive had a few issues with the front site... that stupid non locking screw..... but its more or less sorted now. Besides im putting an elcan optic on it once ive sold my lrb arms m25 (which after 11 months since the exporter received it from the factory is now due to arrive today or Monday.)

While I don't have much experience with the 542 (other than wanting one simply because it's a battle rifle and I have a slight fetish...) I have many hours logged under the XCR-M in .308

My experiences are with the new model FAST stock and rail system. The rifle is well balanced for my taste and not at all heavy compared to my match barreled AR-10. With match grade ammo I consistantly get sub MOA from an improvised rest (my eberlestock pack for example), which surpassed my expectations for this rifle. My one complaint is that the feeding ramps are a bit sharp so it really hates soft point ammo and suffers regular misfeeds/jamming issues if I use it. That said, hollow point or ballistic tip (like Hornady A-MAX) ammo feeds flawlessly. I regularly use this rifle out to 200m with groups under 2 inches and plan to push it to 600m this summer.

I cannot recommend this rifle enough!

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it.

My .02

Haven't owned either, but i like the accessory options available ( mounting options) on the XCR. More stuff available for the XCR, therefore it would be my first choice. That being said, I wouldnt hesitate to buy a FAMAE, when they price drops a bit. Would be nice to have some better magazines for it. When I win our gun clubs FAMAE raffle in Decemeber i will be sure to put a range report!
