Can we have some accuracy reports of the FAMAE 542 with Hirtenberger surplus ammo? I read some time ago the FAMAE can be picky with ammo, how does it run with Hirt. Surplus?

My famae ran great with anything I tried , the hirtenberger was good but had 10-20% flyers 1-2" out of the groups in my famae,M1A,sako bolt . Like the rest my famae had best accuracy with good reloads

Um not good...... like most surplus rounds they were a 4-6" group.
The only bulk factory rounds that did ok were federal american eagle 150s and they were still 2-4" inch groups. You need to hand load to get this gun shooting consistent 2.5" groups

Is it the rifle or the ammo? I get MOA groups with a bolt and 2" to 4" with my M1A (iron sights) at 100M and easy 4" to 8" at 200M. Should I expect less accuracy from à FAMAE than a standard M1A?

Its that light barrel with an aggresive twist. I find most of the cheap ammo shot like ####. you need to either load hot (2700 fps + on a 150gr) or throw heavy pills.
Its hard to feed it for cheap if you want it to group good.

It was a gun i wanted to love... but i really disliked shooting it... it kicked like a mule with anything that had enough umph behind it to shoot a decent group. It would bruise my cheek with that damn ledge on the but stock. I should have went with the folding stock it has a straight profile and doesn't slam into your face when you make a proper cheek weld.

I've shot mostly Hirtenberger through mine with no issues at all--it's 100% reliable and comfortable-shooting ammo for me. I've gotten 3.25 MOA at 100m off a bench with iron sights.

I don't have a FAMAE, but I run hirtenberger throuh a Tikka T3 Tactical with a heavy barrel and I often get 1.5 MOA at 100 yard. (Never said I was a good markesman) but to be fair the only ammo I've ever shot better with is Hornady match grades stuff which is 3.5 times the price. I do get the occasional flyer ever third of fourth group, but like I said I'm not the best marksman so I may just be pulling my shots. I've also cycled this stuff through my M1A, My M1A SOCOM, my Ruger Scout and my SR-25 and I've had good results with it too.

I don't have a FAMAE, but a Danish Garand shoots 4"-5" clusters at 100m. Stock irons, off a bag. I'm waiting on a scope mount to really test her. I'd rate the ammo as excellent.

Best I can do with mine is 2-3" at 100 meters. Love the gun except for the trigger. If any gun needed a aftermaket trigger it is the 542 I have. Extremely long pull that gives me issues with offhand shooting.

Youre kinda echoing the feeling I have about the rifle. Does the fixed stock work well with optics? What color furniture do you have?

I have an LMT MWS that is otherwise sub-moa with excellent quality ammo that throws the lot of Hurtburgler that I have into 4-5" at 100m.
I think it varies greatly on the lot, year of production, storage, etc. Probably explains why it was surplused off.
