Went out and made one stand before we ran the hounds. Got set up before first light, Gave one howl and sat and waited for the sun to rise. About 5 minutes goes by and I caught movement from the far corner, pair of coyotes heading downwind about 300 yards away. Gave a couple barks n howls and they kept coming, I knew they wouldnt hit my wind. The lead one got to 100 yards then stopped and looked back and i decided to shoot. Watched him do the spin and the second one stopped and cut across the field watching its mate. It came all the way in to 50 yards and stopped and I missed!!!!!! He takes off the way he came and I kept woofing him and he slowed down to a trot so I got ready and he finally stopped for one more look. Squeeze the trigger and watch him do the death spin and fall over. I paced it off to about 280 yards. Sat for another 10 minutes and kept howling but never seen anything. Stood up and took 3 steps when I see a coyote coming from the south turn around and run back the way he came. No shot. Owell, First double in a long time.

Both coyotes are pups, weighted 33 and 31lbs. The male had mange bad, no sign on the female.

Nice shooting. That one must have mange, and the other one close to it.
Good to knock a couple of sick ones like those, out of the herd.

The land owner figures there was a yote living his in cattle barn when its real cold out. He showed me the tracks, I showed him the mangy yote and he figures it was that one, Said it had a rat tail, just like this one. It was -20 that morning, His chest and underside was completely bare. Poor bugger
